How to enable preview using Sumatra, while using Acrobat as default PDF editor

I am trying to use Sumatra as the default preview pane reader in XYPlorer, while keeping Acrobat as the default program to view and edit PDF files.

For this, I have found used ShellExView to find the CLSID for the SumatraPDF Preview Shell Extension and am trying to add the following extension to the Previewed Formats:

Code: Select all

pdf>{3D3B1846-CC43-42AE-BFF9-D914083C2BA3}
Unfortunately, that just results in the following error message:

Code: Select all

---------------------------
XYplorer 20.90.0700
---------------------------
The extension "pdf>{3D3B1846-CC43-42AE-BFF9-D914083C2BA3}" contains invalid characters.
---------------------------
What can I do to enable previewing PDF files in XYPlorer using Sumatra?

Thanks.

You can only add this to the "User-Defined Preview Handlers" category, not to any other (they will only accept file extensions)...

Hi highend,

Somehow I missed out on thanking you for your time and suggestions. I tried out your suggestion in July, but somehow could not get it to work. I guess, the problem lay more in my inexperience than in the suggestion.

Tentatively, I have given up on the PDF preview and simply double-click the file to check out the first page, if required. Will try out your suggestion again, during the X'mas break. :-)

Thank you for trying to help me out.

I use this tool to assign preview handler from the installed list.
https://docs.microsoft.com/de-de/archiv ... ion-editor
Works perfect here and no need for any Registry searching and maipulation.

I have SumatraPDF assigned for PDFs in Windows
and set the PDF-XChange previewer for previewing PDFs.
So double clicking opens SumatraPDF and preview is made with PDF-XChange.

Wow. Interesting and probably ancient from 2006 and maybe EOL like RichCopy & RoboCopy.

Sounds interesting but when I run PreviewHandlerEditor.exe I see this:

Strange, because I have .NET 4.8.03761 on my system. :? Any idea?

You need to enable the .NET Framework 3.5 feature via Control panel - Turn Windows features on or off... - Wizard

Thanks. I assumed .NET was downward compatible.

Link goes to this page where my error code does not exist: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/troubl ... tion-error

First I would try it after a reboot.
If this doesn't help try an Offline Installation of .NET 3.5
https://sourceforge.net/projects/framework-3-offline/

Is this method working well still?

With 32 / 64 bit versions of XYP | PDF X | Sumatra ?

Which combinations of the above 32 vs/w 64 would work or not with XYP?

All combinations work

Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | [x] Use 64-bit preview handlers for preview
Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | [x] Fall back to preview handlers of the other bitness

should be ticked if you use e.g. Sumatra 64-bit
