Release file from preview when doing Rename?
This is something that has bugged me for a while, and I don't recall seeing it here before...and it's fully understandable as to why it happens but there might be a better way to handle it than I've found...
Scenario is: You're previewing a PDF file or maybe a DOC and thus have the file open and "locked"...fine, but then when you try to do a rename, it fails as file is still open...so here's my idea: If you've moved cursor focus to the filename and invoked rename, have XY do whatever is needed to release the file, such as what occurs when one moves to the Properties tab...
And because if you're that far into renaming, since you have the filename in edit mode, then even if you cancel, it can release file and reopen it.

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Well, on the DOC file that I had the issue, I now suspect it it may have been something else, but I just retried it on a PDF (main problem type) and I get:
When I hit enter/OK, it then puts me back in edit mode on filename with preview grayed out, but an enter then completes the rename and gets preview back.
I'm using Adobe 7.0.9 for PDF viewing...now for the funny part: I just did it again and it works just fine...so it may be a 1st time only thing? I've had it fail multiple times recently but have'nt yet figured out any pattern.
Upd: It seems that this occurs only for the very first PDF rename in a given XY task/session, and the file selected at XY start has to be a non-PDF type.
Code: Select all
---------------------------
Error Renaming File or Folder
---------------------------
Cannot rename TestFile: There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.

Can't reproduce that. I just restarted XY several times to check if its the first time rename thing, works fine here. But I am using Foxitreader, not Adobe.j_c_hallgren wrote:Well, on the DOC file that I had the issue, I now suspect it it may have been something else, but I just retried it on a PDF (main problem type) and I get:When I hit enter/OK, it then puts me back in edit mode on filename with preview grayed out, but an enter then completes the rename and gets preview back.Code: Select all

Well, I've been able to redo it each/every time that I attempt the very first rename on a PDF within a XY session...but remember, I'm using Adobe 7.0 and W2K, and that may be the difference...BTW, I'm using XY 6.80.26.serendipity wrote:Can't reproduce that. Just for fun, I tried killing the AcroRd32 process while leaving XY running to see if that made any difference...as it gets re-invoked to preview the PDF anyway, but that'd thus be the initial use of it, compared to a re-use...no effect found.

I've been doing a number of PDF renames today, and am finding that it also occurs while I've been in XY for a while...but it's still not every time...
Seq is: Select file > now focus in preview so have to reclick name to move focus back > F2 > type new name > Enter > file renamed > click on next file in list to select > reclick to get focus back > F2 > type new name > Enter > Sharing ERR msg > Enter > focus back in name as not 'saved' yet > Enter > rename ok!

That's right, and I give the system 100 msec to finish all its releasing business.jacky wrote:hmm.. XY does already do all that just fine here. Whether it's an AVI or a PDF, when I rename it it is released first, renamed, and then "re-previewed" flawlessly...
Now, I raised this value to 250 msec (next upload), just to check if it makes a difference. Maybe others have an equally slow computer as JC...

I'd think so very much! -- but here we are talking about 2 heavy MS apps channeled through each other (Word through IE). This is like calling for trouble. We all know what a 1Ghz processor can do in 100 msecs -- a LOT. But it seems (if my theory is right) that this LOT is not enough to release a single Office (my fingers seem to get dirty while I type this word...) document. A couple of million indispensible things could not be done in that time it appears. So I give more time...j_c_hallgren wrote:The W2K sys is a Pentium III at 1Ghz...ok, not that fast...admin wrote:Maybe others have an equally slow computer as JC...![]()
... but I can watch streaming video with no issues...so releasing a file shouldn't be that hard!

It's not your finger speed. You have no influence here at all. Wait for the next version...j_c_hallgren wrote:admin wrote: but here we are talking about 2 heavy MS apps channeled through each other (Word through IE).Huh? It's PDF's that I'm having the most problem with...ok, so Adobe is another hog, we agree...so is the delay needed to move focus to filename and thus allow the preview to release? Cause my finger(s) don't move very quick...and that still doesn't explain the consistent first time issue...I tried that now waiting 1sec between keybd/mouse actions and it still occurred.
Ah, yes, PDF is Adobe. But somehow it feels like Office...

Does it integrate into IE? Or: what happens when you click on a PDF link in the internet? I guess Foxit can handle this and opens?serendipity wrote:I agree with that. BTW Foxit is portable too.jacky wrote:PS: I use Foxit Reader, much smaller & faster. That may have helped as well...admin wrote:Ah, yes, PDF is Adobe. But somehow it feels like Office...
