Select a thumbnails view in the list and run this through the address bar. It toggles back and forth between normal thumbs and something that comes close to a Masonry Grid-view:

What's the old saying, "close but no cigar." Don't get me wrong, I like the gallery wall thumbnail view, but it's not the masonry view that the OP requested (and you said you liked). It would be pretty slick.

Though I think background operations for things like thumbnail building should be a higher priority. ;)

In browsing mode, without import, that has not been implemented yet, maybe in future. Problem here that the imagesizes have to be known which requires acces and scanning of the images which can be sylow.

Thanks. I did download and install fotoARRAY. It looks interesting, but the more I think about, I really don't want to get started and involved with another program for generating thumbnails and viewing photos when I have XY.

I agree and fotoARRAY is less powerful than XYPlorer+scripting+Xnview

If you need scriping the most, yes. Otherwise I disagree - maybe I am biased since I created fotoARRAY.
If you want to browse 200.000 images which are on an (maybe disconnected) USB drive, also including RAW files I wonder how you can do that easily without a database. Or if you want to create albums, browse images from multiple direcories at the same time. Both use cases were the main intend to create fotoARRAY in the first place.

fotoARRAY will produce a PDF file with 1000 or more embedded JPGS which can be further edited (i.e with Affinity Publisher) which is meant to be a basis for picture book. fotoARRAY supports different layout styles, including horizontal and vertical masonry grid. The layout will be used for the PDF export.
If you need to, you can also publish images to your cellphone if logged into the same network or create a modern looking HTML5 image gallery for the web.

I understand that fotoArray has some nice features but if it lacks what I need, these cool features are useless.
