Possible to have tabs with fixed width?

Post by whop_go »

Hello

How can I set my tabs in XYplorer to a fixed size? I have a very wide screen, but usually not many tabs. Because they are stretched to the whole width of the screen, they became rather wide (>200 px or so) and are not good to use any more.

I am looking for a setting so that they are getting smaller if I have many tabs, but that they are only strechted to a maximum of X pixels. If the screen is wider than the tab bar it is left blank at the right.

Thank you.
Mike

PS: If you don't know what I mean, look at Firefox'es tabs!

Hi and Welcome to XYplorer club,

I agree that the firefox kind of tabs is not there, but you said "not good to use any more". By this you mean the tabs dont look good or are you referring to some usability issue. In my case, wider the tab, easier for me to click on them. Maybe i missed your point.

I'll also welcome you to the XY world!

I suspect what he means is that the tabs become SO wide so they make very efficient mouse-ing harder as one has to travel more to get to other tabs...moving a inch vs two-four inches, maybe?

This prior thread came to mind as related, but that was the opposite issue (too narrow) but thought I'd put a link to it here for reference:

I think that's a valid wish and a good idea. But not to soon (because other things come first on my list).

After updating to newest beta and realizing that there are now SO many toolbar icons available, I just had a thought:

Could the area above tree/catalog be used to hold a partial second row of icons, given that (in my case, typically 3-5 tabs) the tabs now are much wider than they'd need to be, and on a higher res display, they'd be SO wide that I'd prefer them to be narrower.

And I could really use the extra 8 or so extra icons that could fit into this area...ok, so it may not be perfect for some, but just something to consider...because my Addr bar now is getting really squeezed so as to be too narrow to really be useful.

And it could simply be that a new separator type be added that would cause any following icons to go onto tab hdr line...sorta like a <BR> does.

No. :)

What I might do one day is a "roll" (my term, for lack of a better one): like in a Las Vegas slot machine, you roll in another set of icons into the same toolbar space, demand. Like switch toolbar1/toolbar2/toolbar3...

Well, since it seems as I recall that gray area right of menubar can't be accessed for this (technical issues, right?), other than by IE (which can do it, as one example), I'd thus then ask for a second icon row as an option as having display that changes isn't my favorite...I rather give up the vertical space than have to either activate another set of icons via click or having them scroll/expand on fly.

In any case, I'd still like to have a way to keep tab headers over the list side only, as the leftmost (for me, Search Results) tab gets 'lost' over the Tree visually to my eyes...INI tweak would be enough for this.
