Is there really no way within the application of updating it?

So far as I can tell, the application has no 'check for updates' feature or anything like it. But, ah, it's under 'online support'. Not everyone will find it there. For people will understand 'support' as meaning 'to do with problems' and they will not think of updates as problems. So I think a UI change would be a good idea.

EDIT: also, when I tried to use feature - when I had found it - I was greeted with this (sic):

I had to highlight invisible text in order to be able to read that text. When I could read the text, it told me - in a little more detail - that I need a new license. Joy! Guess what? I won't be buying a new license.

That black edit box was a bug indeed. Fixed in next version.

However, there is logic to handle an expired standard license. You should have seen this message:
To see the attached files, you need to log into the forum.
