log file

Post by graham »

I have been following with interest the debate both here and elsewhere about DP. I am a casual user of XY and predominately use the mouse so it is sometimes difficult to understand why DP is so emotive. Let me say now that I applaud Don's approach and unless he is convinced then far be it for others to tell him he is wrong.

Right, it now occurs to me that potentially the main concerns can be relatively easily minimized and still retain XY's integrity.

First the possibility of comparing files - under consideration.

Next, confirmation of actions - this is a silly thing but very understandable as humans lack the ability to trust themselves (not the program) so how about providing in the Info panel an optional running log file display. This would be readily checked and provide assurance.

Thus a wish for a new Info panel tab called Action Log.

I agree. I dont need the DP because I dont compare files that carefully yet. But its the human tendency to check once again when an action has been performed. For example, I check my sent mail folder after i send a mail, i check my XYbeta folder after i download a beta from web. All these are common things we all perform, its not being paranoid or mistrusting the machine.
OK my point is, please make it easier for me to to go to destination folder and check if they are same as source folder after copy/paste operation.
Like somebody said its being more efficient. On DP manager you can immediately see in the next pane that the item is pasted and its contents are the same.
On XY one has to use ctrl+alt+F7 and check properties tab to confirm pasted contents. One solution would be to automatically go to destination folder and have properties tab ON. From that point on i dont mind using F7.

Additionally, when I drag&drop files onto a tab teh pasted files are selected and its easy to see what is pasted. But pasted files are not selected when i use right click context>copy to.

@Graham: maybe you already know that when you backup files, there is a log file showing what has been copied and what has failed or overwritten etc.

remember all this does not need DP at all, but maybe for others who do more careful files comparison side by side (or when hitting F7 is just annoying) then DP might be needed. I also see the in future when "find dupes" feature comes one might need DP. just my 2 cents.

Yes, that's very good idea. I had it already at the bottom of this post: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 6900#16900
"Audit Trail" (action/process history) is/was the working title (actually I like Action Log better!). Obviously it is naturally conected to the Undo project. So you should expect this with version 7.0.

If you know Acronis True Image, there a similar action/process history. This is pretty much my vision of it.

PS: I always tried to understand the DP need to enable me to find something better than DP to answer this need, hoping that DP is just a bad solution for a good problem. The Action Log won't be enough for all die-hard DP heads (habits are more attached to form than to content), but surely for some of them.

Just to throw more fuel on the fire - has anybody ever looked at the DP file manager forums to see if they request better tree support?
