MUSD (Mouse Up Show Down)

Post by admin »

Thinking about this caveat again...

Code: Select all

Caveat: Note that your Portable File Associations might not work as
expected here, since there is a crucial difference to a *real*
double-click: The file is not selected, it's not even visible in the
current list. Not every function can handle that.
... I now think when clicking on a file, XY should go there and select it and then perform the double click. This would solve all problems (the caveat could be dumped), and it would also be more similar to clicking on folders (which also brings you to the clicked place).

OR: only go there, and hold CTRL to also open the file.

It's a fast way to access something inside a folder. I guess it makes sense when you click on folders that XY jumps into them but I doubt that this is something that should happen on files as well. It would make more sense if the necessary functions are getting adapted to this new feature so that a single click without modifiers takes CFA definitions into account... At least that's something I'd expect on a click on a file...

Not possible. Many functions, especially in scripting, use the currently selected item as default. And e.g. with Floating Preview you can goto the next/previous item preview, and it would be really strange and confusing to do this in a folder other than the current one.

So, what about this:
Click on a file: go there and select it.
Ctrl+Click on a file: go there and select it and open it.

Here my 5ct:

"Click on a file: go there and select it." would be fine for me. (BTW, I share highend's views.)

Another (new) suggestion/idea: I see MUSD basically as an (easier, more appealing) alternative/extension to navigating via breadcrumb bar. Would it be possible (maybe for both) to not simply land into the clicked folder, but (perhaps when clicking on its icon) to see the list of its subfolders, drilling down in this way (and up with ESC) until one clicks on the folder's name (or, in MUSD, on the file name). Now that would IMO be really great.

Also, I regard the decision not to react on hover but on MU a good one, because I suppose that acting on hover would be too delicate/error prone/irritating.

I thought about that, too. Maybe in phase 2...

Click on a file: go there and select it.
Ctrl+Click on a file: go there and select it and open it.
My problem is just: I normally work with locked tabs and clicking on files would always open a new tab. For me this defeats the purpose of a quick peek / start of clicked items (because it isn't very different from opening the belonging subfolder and double clicking on that item)

Btw, what would be a nice addition as well: If there would be a filtering text field at the bottom of the MUSD scrollable view. Would drastically improve the survey on folders with a lot of items. Like the type ahead find in a pane...

v19.10.0222

Is that one supposed to already use CFAs when Ctrl is used on a file click? If that's the case it doesn't work...

Damn, this is because of:

Code: Select all

v6.60.0040 - 2007-12-02 10:34
+ List: Hold CTRL while double-clicking an item to force opening the
item with the OS associated application, i.e. to bypass XY's
      Portable File Associations.
:blackstorm: Hmm, I need an idea... :maf:

For my part, I am happy, but would be a bit happier with:

Phase 1: Copy UNC Path, as an additional popup-context-menu point (am using UNC often)

Phase 2: Instead of this:
"- Ctrl+Click a folder: Go (same as click, no special function; later this
might be used to drill down into the folder within the MUSD menu)"

something like this (if at all technically possible):
"- Click on a folder icon: Go (same as click, no special function; later this
might be used to drill down into the folder within the MUSD menu)"

(The idea being to depend only on mouse, as far as it gets.)

Yep.

(But in principle, also for local drives (for instance C:\) something like this could be constructed and mostly gives quite an information to others (albeit perhaps not usable, due to account security): \\%COMPUTERNAME%\C$\...)

Hmm, yes, not bad! Are you sure about this syntax (just asking because I simply don't know)?

Code: Select all
