OT: Third Rate Romance

Post by admin »

I need mother-ear help.

https://youtu.be/Vbq9tFrMcQo?t=33

Is this what he's singing?
They were old enough to sort it out
Every thought they thought about, they'd keep it loose
(FYI, you can hate country, but you can't hate Dale Watson.)

PS: I know the original words by the Amazing Rhythm Aces are these:
There was no need to talk about it
They were old enough to scope it out, and keep it loose
BTW, "to scope it out"?? What does that mean? (google translate did not really help)

I'm horrible at pulling out lyrics, but I checked some lyric sites and they have...

Code: Select all

Sittin' in a tiny table in a ritzy restaurant
She was starin' at her coffee cup
He was tryin' to keep his courage up
By applyin' booze
And talk was small when they talked at all
They both knew what they wanted
There was no need to talk about it
They were old enough to scope it out
And keep it loose
She said, "You don't look like my type
But I guess you'll do"
Third rate romance
Low rent rendezvous
And he said, "I'll even tell you that I love you
If you want me to"
Third rate romance
Low rent rendezvous
When they left the bar
They got in his car
And they drove away
He drove to the family inn
She didn't even have to pretend
She didn't know what for
And he went to the desk
And made his request
While she waited outside
Then he came back with the key
She…
I could swear he's saying sort and not scope though.

Or T Bone Burnett and The Handsome Family https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMfB1mQjgY8 There are better videos of this song (on stage singing live), but this one has the lyrics. This song was also used on the great first season True Detective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRPpCqXYoos I'll scope it out usually means, I'll look into it or I'll check it out where "it" is some situation or condition.

YEAH, that's my choice as well! Far From Any Road is one of my favorite songs to play. My girl sings the second voice, beautiful song! (And True Detective 1 is one of the best things I ever saw on TV. TD 2 wasn't bad either!)
T Bone Burnett -- of course, he's far from any doubt.

Conc the lyrics, Dale changed the original here and there (I think he applied some booze as well), and all in all I like the flow of his words slightly better than the original. This is what I understand from the live video -- put (???) where I'm not really sure:

Code: Select all

Sittin' at a tiny table in a ritzy restaurant
She was staring at her coffee cup
He was tryin' to keep his courage up by applyin' booze
The talk was small if they talked at all, they both knew what they wanted

She said, you don't look like my type, but I guess you'll do
Third rate romance, low rent rendezvous
He said, I'll even tell you that I love you if you want me to
Third rate romance, low rent rendezvous

So they went from the bar, they got in his car, and they drove away
They went to the Family Inn,
They didn't even have to pretend, they didn't know what for
He went to the desk and made his request while she waited outside
He came back with the key,
She said, now give it to me, I'll unlock that door

She was like, I've never done this kind of thing before, babe, have you? (???)
Third rate romance, low rent rendezvous
And he said, yes I have, only a time or two
Third rate romance, low rent rendezvous
Cool song!

I thought this was was very nice...The Handsome Family sitting on a park bench in Australia playing Darling, My Darling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA1CZN93bt4 Watch the pigeon. Maybe the pigeon knew they were singing about a praying mantis.

I also meant to say I was never a big Matthew McConaughey fan probably due to some of his early roles, but he was superb in TD 1.

Great clips and fun stuff..

In my late teen days in Southern California, (late 60's, early 70's), the term 'They were old enough to scope it out, and keep it loose' was heard and used enough to often substitute for 'sort it out'.

Used as 'scoping out' (identifying problems), and 'keep it loose' (solving those problems) in romance relationships. The two parts often went together sort of.. well.. hand-in-hand.. Over time, and the speed of changes in teen language, it has disappeared. ..at least to me..

I can see why the words could change for clearer meaning over time.

..Sure liked Dale Watson's singing and guitar playing..

..perhaps to be more clear, 'scoping it out' was more like an acknowledgement of differences of compatibility and "keeping it loose" was not letting things become issues..

Alright, thanks!

BTW, more cool rockabilly-country guitar in this cool clip of early Dale Watson:

And while talking about good stuff: go see Blade Runner 2049. It won't get much better than that for a while.
