New to XY? Try a right-click on the "..." in the "Find" Tab right after "Location" to Set Multiple Locations Easily

Post by Dustydog »

I'm putting this here because it might not seem immediately obvious to someone new to XY, and yet it's extremely useful. XY has to hide all those incredible features somewhere non-distracting.

From the Find Tab, next to Location, right-clicking on "..." you'll get:
Set to Current Path
Append to Current Path
-
Set to Panes
Set to All Tabs
Set to YourComputerName
-
Edit Location...
Edit Location is essentially a Notepad for you to easily micro-manage your search locations. It's quick to add to as well.

Of course, you can always enter a series of locations separated by a bar or semicolon, but why do it the hard way?

Managing locations is necessary for using Dupes properly, for example: You wonder if everything you're looking at in the left pane is byte-to-byte identical with everything in the right pane. Right click on "..." then select "Set to Panes" before hitting the "Dupes" tab. You'll also want to make sure not to have selected "Auto-sync" or "Selected Locations" - both of which can interfere. You'll want "Name" checked in applied filters, and you'll want to select "byte-to-byte" in the "Dupes" tab. Selecting "Invert" in the "Dupes" tab will give you uniques instead of dupes. For a different feature that covers some similar ground, take a look at "Panes" -> "Sync Select".

Though basic, and easily available in Help, it can be overlooked if you're heavily into clicking and exploring. I had to point this out to someone near me recently, so I thought I'd mention it again here. The "..." in the Find tab probably deserves a 'Try a right click!" mouse-over :) as left clicking holds no happy surprises.

Thank you! About half the time I post something here, someone tells me that XY can do it in a better way already, and I feel a little bit "Lrn to r33d, dude." Glad I could help.
