Soft by file type as default view in a folder

Is it possible to open a folder and have all files sorted by extension type by default?

Yes, using Folder View Settings.

You mean a particular folder, or any folder?

Sorting by extension first by global default could result in the 'non typical' extension being at the far end and not seen IMHO

Yes. Any sorting will put something at the end.
