Going from installed to portable?

Hi!

New to the forum <g>. I'm trying XYplorer out and have been extremely favourably impressed so far! I've tried many, many Windows Explorer replacements over the years but this one is turning out to be the best of the bunch so far! So this new box with crap Win10 is turning out to not be so bad anymore!!

I've spent last few days learning the ins and outs of XYplorer and, in particular, a few hours this morning, googling for a solution to migrating the files properly. When I installed XYplorer, I don't recall doing anything special so I'd get a portable install vs. an absolute path one so I don't know if that's why I'm not portable. XYplorer is currently working as a standalone app, as I did copy the main install folder before uninstalling the application (the way I normally proceed with all new apps). And I've found files in the appdatadir folder that it references (really nifty trick, that, of <xydata>!! Kudos!).

I know that 99% of a move towards portability will mean probably just copying that appdatadir folder over to the main folder with XYplorer closed, but there are ini files in there, so I'm not sure it's going to be that straightforward without path changes to relative positions in various of those ini files (?). I've searched and searched online and have found a whole bunch of related things but not how to handle moving the settings files, etc., from the C drive to the main XYplorer folder.

The startup.ini currently contains the string with the culprit appdatadir destination:

[Appdata]
Path=%appdata%\XYplorer

And haven't found instructions anywhere on how to change that to a relative path to where the executable resides. Other portable apps require just switching out the %appdata% to an extra slash, something like this:

[Appdata]
Path=\\XYplorer

But haven't actually found anything in the forum or in the help file, etc., to confirm if that will work and don't want to risk testing anything that might break other references in other ini files, some which I might not know of beforehand.

Also, not sure if there are other precautions I need to take.

So begging the forum's indulgence in asking such a fairly basic question but I have run into the odd trouble here and there before with other apps so would like to avoid anything by asking here first. As I said, extensive online searches over last few days and last couple of hours haven't brought me closer to solution in migrating files to attain portability vs. any other portability issue.

Welcome to the club.

Actually it isn't that difficult. Delete the startup.ini file in your new XYplorer folder (or rename it if you want).

Create a folder named "Data" in the same XYplorer folder. Now copy everything from %APPDATA%\XYplorer
into the "Data" folder.

Done
