Show Folder Sizes

Post by admin »

I'm thinking about removing these old (2004) global options:
Configuration | Tree and List | List | Show folder sizes
Configuration | Tree and List | List | In network locations as well

The new pizza slice button is the better solution for this.
The Size column ctx menu "Show Folder Sizes" will then be coupled with the pizza slice.

What do you think?

I'm all against the obligation of having a button just to activate a function I could drive under config.

Mh, that would require me to display that button... As long as it's an option I'd still like it to be accessible via the config screen as well

No need for the button. As I said:
The Size column ctx menu "Show Folder Sizes" will then be coupled with the pizza slice.

It seems I only read pizza which was enough for me to state: all mine! :ninja:
In that case: Nothing against that change

To toggle "show folder size" (or do something with List in general) a typical user would look in this logical order:
1. Right click List/column header
2. Menu View
3. Config
4. Toolbar
5. Tools > List management
6. ini Tweak

The problem is:
I) There is no one-stop-shop. Even "Help > List all commands" does not show everything
II) Not everyone know all these location of settings

So, this is a bad UX design after all.
I'm thinking about organize settings into Tree-and-List style:
The Tree would be File, Edit, View...
The List would show settings inside respective Tree captions
And searchable (similar to "Help > List all commands")
I'm a casual coder using AHK language. All of my xys scripts:

Hmm.

Well, still unsure what to do. Especially since we have Folder Size Caching the global setting makes more sense than ever, so it would be a weird move to take it away now.

One easy way to remove a bit of the confusion would be to name the two settings differently, maybe:
- Show folder sizes in all lists (config)
- Show folder sizes (pizza + size column)

Hm. Good idea?

I don't like that when Show folder sizes is on in config, I still can change the pizza but there is no visible effect or hint why it is not working. Can be confusing.

I would call the global option "Show Folder Sizes Globally" everywhere (in configuration and on the right click menu of size column). And what is related to the pizza, I would extend the menu caption and the toolbar tooltip like "Show folder sizes (global option is on!)" when no noticeable change clicking on the pizza or the menu.

Edit: Or the "global on" could change the pizza look somehow. And I would emphasize the pizza by renaming to "Show folder sizes in this list" (which wouldn't be necessary normally as it is in the "customize list" menu, but this is special circumstance).

I already suggested "Show folder sizes in all lists" above. "Show Folder Sizes Globally" is another way to put it.

Could any English speaker comment on this?

Indeed. But I think the other one shouldn't be simply "Show Folder Sizes". Additionally, "globally" rather explains me that it overwrites any other similar options.

Yes, "globally" works fine for me too.

"Show folder sizes in this list" is not so good for the other one because it can apply to all lists. (see http://www.xyplorer.com/release_16.70.php#FS)

Sure. You should change "this" to "the".
