Crash on open of xyplorer

Post by swing »

Hi,

I've been using xyplorer for a year or so now with no issues. But today I tried to open it and it immediately crashes. I've tried installing the latest version but it didn't help. I'd rather not do a clean uninstall/reinstall because of fear of losing my saved folders/settings. Is there a way to do a clean start perhaps but not lose your settings?

Thanks!

Do you get any kind of error messages?

Try removing any plugged in portable devices (phones cameras etc) before starting XYplorer. Does this help?

Installed version: Rename the XYplorer folder under %APPDATA% (if you haven't modified the Startup.ini file in the installation dir of XY)
Portable: Rename the Data folder inside the XYplorer dir

That's enough for a clean start and you can still try to copy your config files over...

Thanks @SammaySarkar and @highend.

I unplugged my phone and a bitlocked usb drive, and tried again, and xyplorer started fine. I'm unable to reproduce the crash now, so not sure which of those two were the problem. My guess would be the bitlocked drive, since I have my phone plugged in often and never encountered this before, but I rarely have the bitlocked usb plugged in.

Good to know about how to backup my settings as well.

Thanks again!

Great.
I think you can avoid further startup crashes (even with the offending device plugged in) if you have any location other than This PC/My Computer in the active panes when quitting XYplorer.

btw, Welcome to the club! :)

I'd still like to understand this issue. If it ever comes up again let me know.

I just had this happen to me today. Even through a reboot, where it initially started fine then went right back to crashing.
At first I had thought it was related to the Downloads shortcut/folder being selected, but I closed all tabs and left it on the C:\ drive and even after a reboot it would still crash on start.

Unplugged my iphone (I have no itunes/apple software installed) from USB and the crashing on startup stopped.

Windows 10 64-bit, latest updates, etc.

XYplorer crashing on open has been reported several times. Mostly because of a connected iPhone.
Maybe it's the initialization code for (specific) mobile devices... because it works fine with my Android Nexus 5

I tested iPhone 5 and got no problems (Win8.1). It's perfectly listed with automatic refresh, and the folder "Apple iPhone\Internal Storage" is shown. No crash.

Of course, "Apple iPhone\Internal Storage" has no contents, but that's also true for Explorer.

I'm using an iPhone 6S Plus.
Also worth noting, this is a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro x64 , and I did not have this crashing issue prior to the fresh system install. Although it did clear up some other issues I've had.
This behavior has only appeared after the clean install. I don't currently have any apple software installed so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it in some weird way either.

Is there some sort of log file I can turn on / look for to see if its recording any errors or some such before the crash?
As it stands now I prefer to use Xyplorer as my file manager so this is really annoying.

XY will create an error log on startup if it can. (Located in the app data folder and called "xyerrorlog...") But sometimes depending on the crash even this is not possible.

Anyway, I'd bet some dollars that it goes away with the next Win10 update. Win10 has abundantly proven that it's a premature release in beta state, so let's see what's coming...

Yes, error log is an old feature.

I'll try to get hold of an iPhone 6S Plus...

Experiencing the startup crash with my iPhone 6 plugged in running Windows 10. Unplug the phone and XY starts normally.
