How about Sidecar file as Metadata?

Hello everyone!

i've been thinking about sidecar file as metadata https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidecar_file in xyplorer, this is to supplement the tags and label system but also allow the user to search for metadata outside xyplorer.

example of application that uses sidecar file
This is used in Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/ using a ".opf" inside a folder to store ebook metadata
Tagspaces is also in the process of implementing sidecar using json to store the tags, https://tagspaces.uservoice.com/forums/ ... up-filames
and pydio https://pyd.io/ using .ajxp_meta to store file tags

I think its possible now with a hodgepodge of scripts and external program.

1. create empty copy using a script Create empty copy by admin http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 76ed685cec, maybe add a dot (.) in front and add your own custom file extension like .meta or .sidecar

2. write your own custom metadata inside the file,

Its not a very efficient way but i think it will work, can someone can improve on this?

I'm not a big supporter of programs littering my file system with bytesized files all over the place. AFAIK, Don isn't either.

Here's something relevant though (written by me): http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14288 . Not per file, but this records all tags for a folder branch in the folderroot. That's intended for transferring tags between XY profiles, but can be easily modified to work per file.
