Make TAB read-only

Post by prino »

I just made a major mistake, that lost me about an hour's worth of work, and about three hours to restore the deleted files, by accidentally deleting a bunch of directories from "Disk A" rather than "Disk B", both were open in tabs next to each other.

OK, this was my own stupid, if not to say bloody effing stupid mistake, but it had it been possible to make the "Disk A" tab read-only, i.e. let me move from folder to folder, but disable all modification commands, and that obviously means a very bare menu, as it should also remove all access to external programs, this would not have happened.

In essence, the only keys you could use on such a "read-only" tab would be the cursor up, cursor down, Tab and Enter keys.
Any chance?

I recently found myself in (ongoing) need of something like this. Has something along these lines been implemented since the original query a year ago? Or is it up for consideration?

Nope. Is there any file manager out there that is just a file browser and not a managing tool?

I don't know....I don't want to use (or look at) anything else besides XY!

The scenario: important data files are placed in a network location (not by me or under my control) that I have full r/w access to (again, not up to me). I was hoping to find that XY could prevent me from doing stupid things (e.g. deleting, accidental mouse-stutter drag-drop [same drive move]) to this location I admittedly have too much access to.

I think this is similar to the need of the original poster of this thread...so there's at least two of us...

I understand but XY has some safety belts for this kind of stuff:
Menu - Tools - Configuration... - General - Menus, Mouse, Safety - Safety belts
Like:
[x] Confirm drag and drop
[x] Confirm copy and move operations
[x] Confirm delete operations

and additionally you can configure XY to create log files for what your doing:
Menu - Tools - Configuration... - File Operations - File Operations - Custom Copy Operations
Configure... button -> [x] Create log file
[x] Use Custom Copy

OK, thanks for the info. I don't know that I want to turn on the safety belts; it would probably be too burdensome when I'm NOT working with that special network location I described. I guess I have to pick my poison; be safe and annoyed, or unsafe and possibly sorry. :D

Or... use a second instance that is configured in a more safe way to work only with that network folder...

If going this route you may find the Admin Settings (Access Control) feature to be useful.

It will allow you to configure XY to prevent certain file operations and even lock browsing down to specified paths.
