1) Your XYplorer Version (e.g., v28.00.0801)
2) Your Windows Version (e.g., Win 11)
3) Your Screen Scaling Percentage (e.g., 125%).

Custom Folder Icons

Post by jdhas »

I'm not sure if this is a 'bug report' or a 'feature request,' so I'll go ahead and drop it off here.

I love -- love -- XYplorer. I never imagined I would actually pay for an explorer 'replacement,' as I was never bothered by what the native windows explorer did for me. Until Vista. I love having the power and customization at my fingertips that XYplorer allows.

My only minor gripe is that I have customized the appearance of many of my icons using Mircoangelo, and XYplorer doesn't display these folders at all unless I tell it to display hidden and system folders (which these folders most certainly are not).

I would rather not be displaying all hidden and system folders in order to be able to see my regular folders, and I would rather not remove the customized icons on all of my folders. Is there any other way around this?

Thanks!

Hi jdhas!!

Welcome to XYplorer forums. You surely will enjoy the XY ride.

Ok, regarding your questions, I suggest you to check these two things:

1. In Tools>Configuration and Advanced tab uncheck the "Use generic icons for super-fast browsing" option and restart XYplorer.

2. If your regular folders are hidden (which I dont understand why) then manually unhide them from XYplorer's properties tab in infopanel (use F12 followed by ctrl+1 to see properties tab). Select the folders you want to unhide and in properties tab uncheck "hidden" box and use the green "+" to confirm.

I cant think of any other possible settings as of now. try them.

I'm guessing what it does is make use of the desktop.ini file to set the folder's icon, and if that's the case then it only works for folders that are, indeed, System or ReadOnly. That's just how it works.

I think the official recommendation/description might only mention System, but it actually works the same with ReadOnly.

Anyways, because of this, all applications that let you use custom folder icons will indeed set either one of those attributes to the folder, in order to "activate" the desktop.ini use (which defines, amon other things, what icon to use)

It seems to me that what's happenning here is that your app used & did set the System attributes to all those folders, thus why XY will only show them if you use the Show System Folders option.
You can easilly check this by clicking on such a folder on XY, and on the Panel go to Properties Tab, you'll see which attributes are set.

If you do not what to see system folders, but still wanna use custom folder icons, you can simply unset their System attributes, and set ReadOnly instead (it won't have any other effects).

I'd also take a quick look at this prior thread about this subject:

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
