Odd XY behavior when connecting external hard drive

Post by GerryB »

I have set my Firefox profile folder as a favorite in XYplorer, and even though AppData is a hidden folder, I can get to the Firefox profile beneath it without showing hidden or system files/folders, since nothing in the target folder has the hidden or system attribute. The strange thing is that if I'm viewing that folder and happen to connect my external hard drive, XY immediately navigates back up to my Windows account folder, i.e. the one directly above Documents. I've tried doing the same thing in Windows Explorer, likewise without showing hidden or system files/folders, but it doesn't happen in WinExp, which stays put when I connect the external drive.

When it happens in XY I can quickly get back to where I was by hitting Alt Left, but I'm wondering if this behavior is normal. Could it be that XY scans my entire system when a new drive is connected and treats AppData as unavailable, since it's hidden?

At least for a test you could change settings
View/Show Items/Show hidden Files and Folders and
*/Show System Files and Folders
to allow display of those files and folders, and test again.

Yes, I had already done that, and it stopped XY from changing folders, so I guess my theory was correct.

Another related difference between XY and WinExp is this: In WinExp, if I have a window open with a folder on an external drive or memory stick with no file operations in progress, Windows will let me eject the device without an error message. I guess it shouldn't, since the device is still in use, but instead the window closes automatically as soon the device has been disconnected. With XY, on the other hand, Windows will notify me that the device can't be stopped, as it is being used by another program. That seems to make more sense.

My technical knowledge is limited, but all of the above seems to indicate that XYplorer is more aware of external connections.[/strike]

Oops! I just discovered that I had forgotten about XYplorer's auto-refresh option. :oops: Disabling that stops the behavior I described earlier, whether hidden files are displayed or not, so please disregard all my previous statements, which are just hot air -- except for the part about my limited technical knowledge. :lol:
