"Open On Click" oddities with Excel files..

Post by j_c_hallgren »

I've been busy for a few days with other things...but now found something that, if nothing else, needs to be documented:

Situation is:
a) Have a XLS workbook open directly in Excel (ZZZ)
b) Have two XLS in catalog; one with "open on click" (AAA), other not (BBB)

1) I'm in Info Panel on Preview tab, looking at a folder, for example
2) I click on XLS in Cat without "open on click" (BBB)
3) Shows that XLS in IP Preview just fine
4) I click on XLS in Cat WITH "o-o-c" (AAA)
5) Preview still shows BBB! :?
6) Clicking on Excel for ZZZ in taskbar does nothing! :(
7) Neither does clicking on BBB in XY Cat!

I have to shift XY preview to a folder to 'unlock' my Excel task so I can get back into it. :P
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Office files are not previewed by XY directly but by an instance of IE embedded in XY. Nobody knows what IE is doing there. Some interesting observations as yours are no big surprise.

Recently some users reported problems with IE7 and Office preview. Can anybody here confirm that XY's Office file preview still works with IE7? And what it takes to make it work?

Ah, good to hear. At least the first part.

To "unlock" a previewed file the preview has to be ended. Currently the only way to do this is to unselect the previewed file or preview another file. There is no specific command to this. Currently "Preview" (Ctrl+Q) will start a preview if none is active, else hide the panel. Maybe it would be better to make it stop any preview instead of hiding the panel!?!

hmm... thought about this, and yes, I think you're right Ctrl+Q should show panel & init the preview ("load"/lock the file), or hide the panel and release the file, it would make sense indeed.

But only change this behavior for this specific feature, one should still be able to hide the panel (F12) and not have the file released then, especially for preview that still works with panel hidden (eg. Audio preview)

Help me understand correctly: Which is the one that no specific command is for (unselect the current preview -or- preview another)?

Personally, I'd like to keep the IP showing but just UN-preview (unselect) the current file...and have this ability via mouse action also, even if a tiny bit longer to access, as recalling keyboard actions is not my strength!

You can do that, mouse or keyboard actually. To stop a preview (and release the file) all you need to do is to unselect it, so Ctrl+Click on it with mouse, or click on a blank area to loose any selection, or you can use Ctrl+Space to (un)select the focused file with keyboard.

 Like I said, remembering KS is not my best ability!
And I'd not looked it up in my tables, so thanks for the reminder!
So Cntl+Space needs to get loaded and stored in my internal memory banks!
It's the easiest one of those you gave to do what I want.

Well, not sure if it'll help or not, but on List Ctrl is used on a few KS to deal with the focused item: as mentioned Ctrl+Space will (un)select it, and Ctrl+Up/Down will allow you to move the focus without affecting any selection

hmm.. I have to ask, could you add so Ctrl+Q would actually hide the panel if we're in Preview tab and there are no selection? Right now it does nothing, and I'd like that cause often when I have no selection I like/am used to to hit Ctrl+Q a couple of times to get the Panel on Preview tab and hide it...
