XyPlorer as a HTPC FrontEnd

Post by XyUserNut »

Hello, I have my wife using the PC as a media center,

What I would like to do is for her to launch xyplorer, and when it opens, it gives her the option to click between 4 or 5 BIG ICON folders with BIG FONTS.

Xyplorer only displays the file types I choose.

then, launch the files from the explorer with the associated portable app. And voila all that done with a remote.

She shouldn't be able to delete, move or do anything with the files.

Is that possible with xyplorer ?

If she can search the directories with http://www.voidtools.com/ utility, it would be great, because it's instant.

Tools - Configuration - Preview - Thumbnails - Choose your size for Size #3
Tools - Configuration - Colors and Styles - Fonts - Main contents - Choose a large font size
Menu - View - Views - Thumbnails #3 (<your selected size from config>)

Xyplorer only displays the file types I choose.
Help: Visual Filter

Help: PFA (Portable File Associations)

Help: Admin Settings (section [Access Control])

Wow, thanks for the fast reply...

Is it possible to remove the left tree panel ?

Is it possible to add multiple folders to the main window ? like music, videos, audio. They are all in different folder trees.

I'm afraid, reading the manual/help remains a task on your side.

I mean that when you open xyplorer, you only have the main window with shortcuts to the folders you want, and nothing else, no menu, no toolbar, nothing

Assign a keyboard shortcut for "Save settings" and "Toggle Main Menu".

Create a paper folder with the folders you need and switch to it.

Configure everything as needed (as described earlier), then disable everything under
"Menu - Window"

Configuration - File Operations - Find Files & Branch View - [ ] Show filter information in list

Right click the bar at the top (Paper folder: ...) - [ ] Show information bar in the list

Hit your shortcut for "Toggle Main Menu" & "Save Settings"...

Thanks I will try it.

Maybe someone should make this an option in xyplorer, like a theme or something since the purpouse is so specific. :)

ONE more thing xyplorer can do !!!

Hehe

Ok, I am getting there, been working on this all morning and reading the manual... Complicated stuff !!

I got it to the way I would like it to work, but

I am faced with three main problems now :

Is there a way to make the paper folders appear instantly when you open the program ?

Is there a way to have a pane on the right for preview ? I find this Great as I don't need any of the other programs I normaly use ? For example, I click the file, and a preview opens on the right with the file playing, and I can continu browsing.

Is there a way to keep the preview open, and I can run a slideshow from another folder with my pictures ? That way, when people come over to our house, we run music and go display a slideshow from the NATURE images folder.

Is there a way I can remove EVERYTHING besides the window of the "Paper folder". I mean also mean the XYPLORER top bar and the column headers you click on to sort.

I know this is way beyond what xyplorer was meant to do, but it's still cool if it can do that !

When you have a paperfolder open and save your settings it'll open with it the next time you start XY.

Help: Floating Preview

It's a preview. It previews what you currently select...
I mean also mean the XYPLORER top bar
Nope, not in a reliable way (switching folders would make it visible again). Creating an e.g. autohotkey program that would hide it every 50 ms would be a workaround.
and the column headers
When you are in thumbnail view there aren't any columns?

Ok, I will try all that.

The columns do not get removed when put thumbnails view.

The paper folder does not get saved when you save settings or layout. I discovered that if you put "paper:MyHTPCFolders"' in the startup path, then it works.

I am talking about removing these three bars
