Background: I often want to resequence a folder of pictures e.g I might decide after looking at them that the filename order should be different. I used to do this with ULead PhotoExplorer where you could just drag and drop thumbnails and it would auto-resequence. But my old copy of PEX no longer runs under Windows 7. I found the free utility "Advanced Renamer" which can do what I want, but it's clunky. Evidently, something similar used to be available in Win XP but is now gone in Win 7; maybe due to auto-arrange settings.
I'm pretty sure that if I could re-order the thumbnails in some folder view, then I could drag them into my favorite such util ("Magic File Renamer") and resequence them as desired.
--> SO - I have searched the XY Settings, Help, and the forum here and find no mention of dragging and dropping thumbnails to rearrange them in any view. On the right-click menu in the thumbnails view, I do have "Sort By" set to "Unsorted". But still I can't move them around.
Is there an XY capability or setting I haven't found?
Thanks
Can I drag & drop thumbnails as prep for resequence?

Tools > Customize List > Manual Sorting
Or put the "sticky icon button" on your toolbar and right-click it from there.
EDIT: Almost forgot - you have to drag pics at their caption, not their thumbs

Interesting! I never knew we had this feature. Now I'm a bit confused about something. What's the difference between this "Manual Sorting" and sort by "Unsorted" which was mentioned by Don when he was talking about Paper Folders. That confused me a bit.Stef123 wrote:Tools > Customize List > Manual Sorting

You can move items around only if Manual Sorting is ticked.
Unsorted is just another sort order (or disorder) like ascending, random.

Yes.
In normal folders, "Unsorted" is the original order as delivered by the file system.
In paper folders, "Unsorted" is the order as written in the paper folder file.

Thanks Stef123 & others. "Manual Sorting" does allow me to move picture icons / thumbnails around in the view pane. I didn't find it because my help & forum searches were on keywords involving "arrange". BTW - you can drag pictures by either their icon (thumbnail) or caption.
HOWEVER - with Manual Sorting enabled I can't drag & drop out of XY! Which defeats my entire purpose. Is this a bug or is there some reason for it?

But only if you have Left-click MDBU disabled...BTW - With "Manual Sorting" enabled you can drag pictures by either their icon (thumbnail) or caption.

Thank you SammaySarkar. Things happen fast on Asteroid B-612! Anyway, I wanted to repost my edit which was too slow and got bumped. The main point is:

"Things happen fast on Asteroid B-612!"
Let's see what Don thinks of it. Meanwhile you can right-click drag, but that often pops up a drag-drop menu.
With ManSort enabled, Xy thinks all left-click drags are meant for resorting (which XY probably should not) . You see the resort line/bar moving around in the list in this case. With Manual Sorting enabled I can't drag & drop out of XY!

Actually, right-click & drag works fine. It didn't occur to me to try that...
I do agree it would be better if left-click &drag worked too, but I understand how that's trickier to program here.
Thanks again.

Wrong assumption on my part: I figured you also have Mouse Down Blow Up enabled (the reason it doesn't work here)Papoulka wrote:.
