2 questions regarding file tagging

Post by autocart »

I would really like to start using tags, but:

Scenario1:
One thing that keeps me from actually diving into file-tags is the fact that I do not work in an completely isolated environment but in a company network.
Therefore, I am afraid that if I would start using file-tags and files are renamed or moved with a different application than XY (could be me or someone else on the network) then the file-tags are lost.

Question 1:
Is there already some kind of fuctionality (build-in or external) of how to restore "orphaned" file-tags to their original but now renamed/moved files? Somehow a repair function for the tag database? Or how do u guys go about this problem?

Scenario2:
Another problem that keeps me from using tags is not knowing about an easy method of how to assign tags to new files. Typically I create a new file inside another application with the save as... dialog. If I have to switch to XY, locate the file, locate the command to tag it,... it is just to tiresome. Plus, someone else may add a file that I would like to have tagged... similar problem but different reason.

Question 2:
Did any of u guys find a cool method of how to tag ur files? How do u do it?

EDIT: I mainly ask because if there is nothing like that and also not under development by someone then I might try it myself (emphasis on try ;) ).

I get to see many different company environments.
Some use tagging features of specialized image/file managers that come with products like the Adobe Creative Suite.

Others have their own customized solutions or more generic stuff like this here:

I have no experience whatsoever in this respect, nor am I affiliated to the above.
Seems like they store their tagging information in the meta-information of files.
