Define current column layout as default

Post by admin »

"Define current column layout as default" is badly worded, I need to improve it. It's not a "default" but just a stored setting like "Home" (but not per tab but per list mode: one for browse, one for find, one for recycler, etc.) where you can go back to. Only clicking Restore Column Layout from Default will make use of this setting.

What would be a better name for the two commands?

In WordTM there is "Set as default Shape" too for an temporary default setting. Till I redefine it. On the fly. How often I want.
So default may be ok.

Otherwise I would think about "preset"?

"Define current column layout as preset"
"Restore Column Layout from preset"

Maybe use the word "basis" (or 'base') instead of 'default'? Since those imply a starting point...
And use 'Save" instead of 'Define" to better match up with restore.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

How about "Template"?

What we need is something "almost irresistible" that would make it easier for a user to create a Column Manager script. :P

Seriously though a way to manage sets of columns would be a very welcome addition. Take a look at how Process Explorer does it:

I haven't given thought to what a good way to handle the differences in available columns between the various list modes would be but I'm sure we can come up with something.

So in all honesty my vote is to remove those items entirely and replace them with a much better feature. ;)

I'm still able to resist, but I like the term "favorite". What about these:

Save as Favorite Column Layout
Load Favorite Column Layout

Let's wait till I have added Custom Columns in 13.90 or 14.00. Then this better feature will make maximum sense.

Doh! I should have left it with their default name of "Column Set 0".

The problem with these is the concept of List Modes not something most users ever think about; heck I've been here for years and I still have a hard time remember when a setting applies to only a Tab, Pane, or List Mode.

The real challenge is naming these commands such that it is clear that they apply to the list mode.

I suppose making the captions show the list mode names is out of the question?

Too late.

I don't think there is a problem. Users will understand the concept of list mode on an intuitive level.

Hmmm...

It was better before. Semantically, it was more clear.

Load Favorite Column Layout gives the impression that there is a choice other than the one favorite. How can you have a favorite when there is only one of something?

It's odd...now I shall go sulk and eat ice cream and shed a tiny tear for the old dialog articulation.

I'm in agreement with this view and that's why I avoided using the term favorite in my suggestion.

Don't you two start blaming me; I never meant to suggest it at all!

Besides I still think "Save Column Set..." and "Load Column Set" would be better. ;)

I wasn't blaming you one bit! You just gave the screen print that had the word in it...I was simply saying that favorite can imply other non-favorites
Besides I still think "Save Column Set..." and "Load Column Set" would be better. ;)
But that may have similar issues in that Set can imply other sets...trying to find the perfect word can be a real challenge!

That's my point! Instead of renaming the items they should be replaced with a feature that allows saving multiple column sets. :P

You heard Don, he said right after 14.00. ;)

A wish (most probably a lonely one):

I am used to have the line number column visible. For me it would be great when a double click on the header of that column (the #-area) would load favorite column layout. :)
