I still have to use WE to update XY (don't I?).
I wish I could just have XY check for updates every day/week/month (or could a "push" system be used for registered users?). And then it updates itself automatically without me ever having to fire up WE to get the new EXE running.

Well, depends on how you do it. Whenever I install a new beta/version I open the file in WinRAR, then close XY, start the Installer, which when done (re)start XY, and I close WinRAR. No need to use WE here.
I don't think an auto-updater is planned, as it would required probably another EXE just for that, etc. There's alreasy a link (Help/XY on the Web/Check for Updates) and it will probably stay like that (at least, for a while)

Jacky is correct, in that Win Expl is not needed for updates...I've recently started opening the Zip file directly, instead of first saving it locally...and then with XY closed, I use the "install" function in WinZip to actually do the install process, and then restart XY...by doing so, I don't have a copy of the zip or the EXE here, which has only been an issue one time recently...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

OK, OK, so you're both clevererererer than I
I still stick to what I said about it not exactly being a "slick" way to do things
I'm sure that this can be put way on the end of the back burner and all, but it would give the application a certain amount of "polish" I feel.

It seems to me such a feature would increase XY's tiny little size by more than it would be worth, given the nature of the application. Sure, windows, explorer, firefox have built in software updating -- but they're (a) big packages that take a while to download (b) potential security liabilties and frequently patched
Xyplorer, on the other hand, is tiny. I'm fairly confident an updater to your specifications -- to implement something which would eliminate any steps between checking the version and being updated, would more than double xyplorer. Points for convenience of update, maybe, but worth it? It takes me 30 seconds to uncompress the non-install archive -- just open it in 7zip, slap F5 and be done with it.

And for us on the leading edge, who use only betas, whenever I bring up the main index page for forum and see a new post to the Beta Vers sub-forum, I know there's something to look at and likely install...and given that I check here at least once a day minimum usually, I'm always pretty up-to-date...in some cases, I've installed a beta within minutes of it being available...that would beat most any auto-update by a long shot, as that would only reflect the "official" vers, which are not as often.

Hence my request for a "beta" featurej_c_hallgren wrote:...that would beat most any auto-update by a long shot, as that would only reflect the "official" vers, which are not as often.
Eh, I'm happy to let this one lay anyway...

I've been doing what Allen does (F5 in 7-Zip or ALT+E in WinRAR) for the Beta non-install zip file. Dirt simple and fast.
