Just my 0.02€
Till now XY interface has been a beautiful example of integration, there are several sections (tree, list, catalog, IP, AB+toolbar) and yet everything looks perfectly as part of a whole.
BC is certainly eyecatching, and useful, but kind of miss its "identity", its position in the rest of the interface. It seems like "added on top", not "emerging between other elements".
I know it's not like adding another tab to the IP, so I think we should think a little from the pov of "form follows function".
Many folks, some of which working for MS, merged AB and BC because AB holds paths and BC is and over-functional representation of a path. Fine.
My design above stems from a similar reasoning, considering that a tab caption says "what and/or where" a tabs contains/point to in a short way, and BC is just an expansion of that piece of info. That's why they share the same back color - they're actually connected. I'll attach a pic.
Imagine the whole interface as drawn on a piece of foldable paper. List and tabbar are exactly in front of you, and when BC is hidden the BC part of the sheet is parallel to the ground. When you decide to show the BC, you unfold the sheet along the red lines. If tabbar stays fixed in space (and it does within XY interface since showing/hiding BC doesn't change the position of the tabbar on screen) then BC appears as an "extension" of the tabbar. And everything makes sense, because when BC is hidden there's a grey line between list headers and tabs - meaning, tabs and List are (kind of) disjointed, but (active) tabs and BC shouldn't be.

That's a possible point of view. As I said, it might be possible in a future version.

Nice drawing!

PS: But I still have no problems at all with the current design. It's 100% kanzen and beauty, but I have no time to provide drawings to prove it. :)

Don,would these two be possible

Drop files/folders on components of BC Bar to copy/move files to that folder component (like explorer)

Clickable breadcrumb icon (unlike Explorer which just selects the whole path)
;BreadCrumb Bars Icon Tweak
BCBarIconLC=
BCBarIconRC=
Which I would straight away point to Add Tags and Add Labels or some scripts.

I'm hoping that once the AB and BC are merged, a couple context menu items could be added:

Paste & Go
Paste & Search

Paste & Go is a cool idea, but what is Paste & Search?

Yes, but is this desirable?
Yes, I think so. Also, remember that the tooltip for "Select last used subfolder" explicitly says this should work for breadcrumbs too.

When navigating just one step using the breadcrumbs, I think of that exactly like going back or forward.
This can be argued either way and there's no right answer. But currently there is an inconsistency between BC bar and AB menu. Navigating by breadcrumb using the AB menu selects the last used subfolder. Navigating by breadcrumb using the BC bar does not. Whichever way you decide, I think they should work the same.
OK, agreed. I wil remove it from both, because the BC itself contains the information, no need to double it.

Cool. Remember to update the help and the tooltip which both currently mention that it works for breadcrumbs.
Just done. :)

Paste & Search is basically the same thing but with the ? character injected automatically.
