App works fine, but word does not open inside the grey field. It opens separately as word doc.
Win7 pro 32-bit
Opens within the grey area for me. A DOCX file on Win 7 Pro 64-bit for Word 2010.

Aha! :D So here's hope again. Confusing, isn't it?

Oh, that's bad. Which version of Office? Can you tell me the text in the word doc's title bar (or simply post a screenshot)?

I expect it to be [file title] - Microsoft Word.
Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007
title bar is "name of file - Microsoft Word"

OK, that seems to be a constant over all Word versions I have seen.
I only wonder why it opens separately as word doc at your side. :?

However:
- it sometimes takes a long time to open the doc (first time) -- actually sometimes it hangs the program
- when I close the doc, it sometimes asks me if I want to save changes, even when I didn't think I made any changes...

Looks interesting!
Just to make sure, the XY Office preview does not work on your system (you get download dialog instead)? What Office version do you have?
Correct -- Office preview does not work. Win 7 x64, Office 2003 Pro (I have 2007 and 2010, but they're not installed on this machine)
admin wrote:Pity, but beyond my control I'm afraid. Do you see any patterns with that "sometimes"?
Just downloaded the new version of DocPreviewTest.exe, ran it (it started fine), selected a .doc file, and it hung (though it appeared to have completed loading the file -- the spinning circle went away, but I couldn't regain control of DocPreviewTest.exe, and nothing was displayed in the window). No temp lock file was created, either.

Just tried again with the same result.

Tried again with a different file, and it worked just fine, indicating that there's something strange about the first .doc file. So I tried to open in directly in Word, and it wants to run a query (prompting for input) -- that appears to be what's causing the hang...

Also, tried a .docx file, and that one also worked (though the expected lengthy startup issue due to needing to convert .docx to 2003 format). In this case, the title of the window remains "DocPreviewTest."

I believe this should help shed some light on the issue, yes?

Thanks!

admin wrote:Here's a little test app for DOC/DOCX preview. This is for folks where the Office preview does not work (because you get the bloody Download dialog instead).

- unpack the zip to some temp folder
- pack some of your DOC/DOCX files in that folder
- run the app (DocPreviewTest.exe)
- click the top button (<< Open Doc...) and select a DOC/DOCX
- does it preview in the dark grey field within the app?

PS: of course you need to have Word installed!
Preview in XYplorer of both DOC and DOCX gets the download dialog; DocPreviewTest 1.00.0003 does preview DOCX in the dark grey field within the app but not DOC: DOC files get *automatically* (no download dialog) opened in a Word window behind the DocPreviewTest window. Pressing the Close Doc button in DocPreviewTest closes the Word window.

Office 2010 x64 RTM / Windows 7 x64 RTM.

OK, tried on my Win7 64-bit laptop which also has Office 2007.

Opening any doc/docx gives run-time error:
Clipboard01.jpg
By the way, the XY preview does not work, i have not set the workaround on this.

Is that 64-bit Office?

Office 2010 is the first version of Office to have a 64-bit version; Office 2007 only came in 32-bit.

Ok, too bad.

So, all in all, this does not look very good to me. I have vague information that Norton Virus Tools can be the cause of this, but this will be hard to test and is not satisfying at all because many use this stuff.

This probably means bye-bye to my plans to improve the office preview. I will still make an attempt to support WordPerfect, though.

It does not on my machine (XP). The application window opened instead (Word 2010), for either doc or docx files. Oddly enough, one of the files did open in the gray, but only after flashing an Excel window first. It was a file with a linked Excel table...

How do these files behave when you preview them in XYplorer?

The old "open or save" message.

News from the lab. Here's an attempt at a WordPerfect preview. Download the Zip, unpack, run, and try the "Open WPD... >>" button and see what happens. It works here.

EDIT: You need to have WordPerfect installed for this!
