By default, large icons are shown -- there has got to be a reason for that ;). While it may be of benefit to switch to smaller ones on screens of low-medium resolutions, doing so at 1920x1200 is an abomination as icons and buttons become miniscule. What's currently defined as "large" hits the sweet spot (hence it's the default), but let's be fair -- if we can take CTBs' size down a notch, by the same token, we should be able to enlarge them.

P.S. The CTB menus (not context) don't scale up/down with CTBs and appear at the mouse point, which often results in them covering the adjacent [to the right] buttons -- a usability no-no. There should be consistency as "Views" menu behaves differently.

Just to make sure: resizing a bitmap always produces a lesser quality than keeping the original size. If you need a certain icon in top quality you have to make it yourself, pixel by pixel. XY will happily use your icon. You can then share your icon here in the community and make others happy.

downsizing an image may lower its resolution but not necessarily the quality--depending on what resize method is used.

would it be possible to add better image resizing for the icons in XYplorer? such as bicubic which would give high quality resizing. that would also fix the problem...

Image

compare to current low quality...

i notice in the image preview options there is an option for high quality image resampling. can the same type of resampling be used for the toolbar's custom icons?

No, I have no influence on this resampling because I need to call a Windows API for the job. Hence the bad quality...

Speaking frankly, if large toolbar icons defaulted to 32x32 -- an omnipresent size in multi-icon resources these days -- then you wouldn't have to call a Windows API to do the job, people wouldn't complain about bad scaling and users won't have to engage 3rd-party applications to do resampling in order to achieve good quality icons. On the other hand, there's a difficulty in implementation and perceived oddness of icons' size for a toolbar. Tough scales to balance ;)

i would prefer to set the toolbar icons to a universal size such as 32x32 if that would fix the icon quality issue. i use a modern large widescreen resolution and have room to spare.

Well, that's you. My plan is to appeal to other users as well.

But I just had an idea that might work... :)
