Not practical for a number of internal reasons. The status bar must remain undivided.

Ahhhhh, ok. Well, I think the statusbar looks natural at the bottom. That's how most apps are designed. I know that will make the data contained in the statusbar farther away from the file listing, but I don't forsee that as a problem.

Tree at bottom, yes! It's good for most people, since they use higher resolutions, as JustinF says.
