I tried to repeat your steps here but could not reproduce the problem.
ilya wrote:As for topic problem (tags vanishing and reappearing) - it's another problem. I have this once before too. Tags and comments dissapear in the list, I hit F5 and they reappear, but after a couple of seconds dissapear again. I'm restart XY (with saving) and after all was good.
I was never able to reproduce this. Weird.

The XYplorer tags are saved in an extremely accessible format, a simple human-readable text file, which can easily be backupped as a protection against user errors.

I currently don't see any minor or major setbacks here at my own installation.

But apparently there is a minor and somehow elusive painting problem with one or more users (which I hope to be able to reproduce on day), and there are ways to lose tags without really wanting it, so I should implement some optional warnings or other safety measures. I will think about that.

A question: Why did you use Database Cleaning up for this file? Database Clean Up is not necessary at all for a functioning tags feature. And it will terminally destroy data that could otherwise be easily restored. I really wonder whether I should remove this button. Its only purpose is performance, but the difference will not be notable unless you have hundredthousands of orphaned tags.

Hm, I don't know. I love to have all data up to date and clean.

I thought so. I think I will remove the button. It's too tempting...

In your particular case: Could it be that the path of the 97 files had been renamed (in another app)? In that case all tagged items under that path would be removed from the database on a clean up.

But how we will be able to clean orphaned tags and comments?

No, only one file was renamed outside the XYplorer. All other files was vanished immediately after cleaning database for one file. Maybe after first database cleanup the database file was somehow damaged (paths or filenames)?

Yes, a way to do this should remain. I think I will reorganize the interface a bit so that it is less suggestive in favor of regular clean ups. I'm still waiting for a good idea to enter my mind...

I cannot see how this should have happened. The clean up procedure is very simple and error proof.

i've had the same problem with label/tags vanishing.
i don't know a way to reproduce it, but it doesn't seem to be restricted to any specific folder.
also, here are a few things i noticed when the text is missing (for labels):
-restarting xy does not bring the text back.
-sorting by label doesn't work.
-if i add a new label, the text appears for that label alone.
-if i remove a label, the text appears for all labels in the list.

When it happens again, please send me your INI file.

scratch that.
this problem might be folder specific after all, even tho i see it in various folders and drives.
i was able to fix it in one folder by renaming a subfolder (which had some tagged items inside) from "!_Charts" to "_Charts".
removing all tags from the items inside "!_Charts" also fixes it.
so, in this folder, it seems to be caused by the "!" at the start of the name.

no clue about the other affected folders yet...

it also happened in a fresh install.
i just had to display the label column and change the setting "tags->coloring style->label column (caption)".

Really? Give me the steps to reproduce.

okay, i managed to reproduce it step by step:
1a. enable the label column for browse mode
1b. change the setting "tags->coloring style->label column (caption)".
2. create these folders:
C:\test\!_test
C:\test\New Folder
3. add some label to "New Folder"
4. go inside "!_test", create a text file "file.txt" and add some label to it.
5. go "up" and you'll see that the caption in "New Folder"s label is missing.
6. go to "!_test" again and remove the label from "test.txt".
7. go "up" again; the missing caption is back.

BTW, i tracked this bug back to xy v9.80.0108, the version where tags were introduced.

BTW, v9.90.0401 resolved this for me. :D

Nice detective work, Muroph!
