tags vanishing and reappearing

Post by sfranky »

when I add new tags to a file, then enter a folder and go back up, the tags vanish. When i put a LABEL on a file (thus highlighting the whole row, this is something i must have defined a few days before), the vanished tags reappear.

excellent work by the way!! multiple tags offer an entirely new way to work with files.. this is the reason i ditched opera in favour of firefox..its bookmarks could be multiply tagged..

Cannot reproduce.

Can you repro it with a fresh installation?

no, it seems I can't. I have another computer, tested it there and it doesn't happen.
Weird thing is, it doesn't happen everywhere. Just in this one folder.
btw I tried opening a folder now in that dir, and XY crashed :(
I ll test it further and post here..

Confirm - this appears to happen to me - using v9.80.0111.

And actually mine are NOT re-appearing (but see below re. folder structure).

Not a clean install - but am using in portable mode and it only appears to affect the root of my USB drive (tags added deeper in the folder structure appear to be unaffected) - although this may just be a red herring?

Arrg, to many possible factors - the dissapearing tags were also multiple (comma seperated tags) the ones that stick appear to be single tags.

Will try and do some more testing tonight.

This happens sporadically. When I double-clicked the list white space to move up to the parent directory, I ended up with the first image. When I right-clicked the label for file 'Testing.ppt' and selected 'Select All Unlabeled', I got the second image. When I refresh the screen with an F5, I get the first image again. When I search everywhere for the 'ChangeManagement' tag, file 'BeyondCompare.doc' shows up and properly displays label and tag values.

This is not a show-stopper for me, since I have found a way to temporarily redisplay these values and, more importantly, I can find what I want.

I have never seen this. No idea how it is possible. :|

Focusing on the key-F5 artifact, I get the impression that the logic flow skips a part that "paints" label and tag values, but does not skip "painting" label colors. If I am close to the truth, then there are different conditions surrounding the former and latter.

I also met the disappearing and emerging tag and comments.

But today I have the really lost tags, labels and comments for 97 files. It's a very hurtfully, because there were many tags, and comments for some files were very detailed.

In such unstable conditions, the use of tags and comments are not very attractive.

:(

Did you try right-clicking the Label for a file, and "Select All..."?

The information is not only missing in XYplorer's UI but also in tag.dat? tag.dat, despite the extension, should be readable by notepad.

It was in this sequence: I set tags to the one file. Then this file was renamed outside XYplorer and tags was lost. I run command Database Clean Up and tags for one orphaned file was cleaned. Exactly after that I find out that some part of my tags in the List was dissapear. I restart XYplorer, but it not help (like was when tags and comments dissapear temporary once before). Then (my mistake) I run again command Database Clean Up and take warning about 97 orphaned files cleaned up.

To state the obvious, that doesn't sound good.

The one file losing its tags due to a rename outside XYplorer, is according to spec. It sounds like the only action you took at the time the information for the other files went, was running the command Database Clean Up?

As for restarting not restoring the missing tags, did you restart XYplorer without saving? (Regardless of the setting of Configuration > Startup & Exit > Save settings on exit, you can do this via File > Restart without Saving.)

Immediately after losing tags for only one file and Database Cleaning up for this file (that was logical, because this file is renamed outside) XYplorer lost 97 more. It one problem, very strange and dangerous.

As for topic problem (tags vanishing and reappearing) - it's another problem. I have this once before too. Tags and comments dissapear in the list, I hit F5 and they reappear, but after a couple of seconds dissapear again. I'm restart XY (with saving) and after all was good.

XYplorer Developers are championing a feature that, as far as I am aware, has no standard definition in Windows, such as the Mac's OpenMeta. Without a standard framework, XYplorer Developers must invent the "entire wheel"; so, they have their work cut out for them. As long as I do not lose all of my invested work in XYplorer tags, I am willing to tolerate the minor setbacks and learn to work around them. But I'll confess that I have come close to abandoning this potentially valuable feature, something that I take for granted with Leap.
