New XYplorer app icon bug

When you look at the default icon in your top-left window corner (or in the taskbar), does it have alpha transparency? (Just checking whether certain icon-defining functions work at all under W7...)

I am uncertain as to how to be able to tell that. The ICO file definitely has the alpha channel though.

I can tell from a screen shot. The pixels at the borders should slightly adjust to the background color. You need a screen loupe software to check that.

Yup, its been working always for me on Win7 x64.

On XP that is, right? Works on XP here also. No go on Win 7 though. Clutching at the straws: could brackets in ICO file's path be screwing things up?

The icon you posted works fine on my Windows 7 PC. Only the taskbar icon remains the original one until I reboot, so that's a Windows thing.

One thing you might want to check: does the .ico file have different file permissions from the rest of the files?

I was playing with my startup apps (start>All programs>startup) and by chance set the XY's shortcut icon to 1 and my shortcut and taskbar icon was blank. When i changed to icon #2 and OKed i got my icon back.
Did you check this?

Wahey! I managed to work around it. Went to Start -> All Programs -> XYplorer and changed the icon of the shortcut to XYplorer.exe. Still, the question of why that tweak didn't work remains

Pardon if I confused you. Curently, I can only get the taskbar icon to display the desired icon -- and that is temporary and lasts until I update XYplorer. The Aero Sneak Peek and XY's title bar icons do not appear to change at all (see below)

Thank you for getting me up to speed again. It seems that XYplorer itself does nothing with the custom icon file since the taskbar icon is an Explorer thing. I wonder whether XYplorer (whether because of file permissions or something else) can't access the icon file?

XYplorer can definitely access that icon file, because I have just asked for a CTB to use that ICO file and its icon did change.

Given that two Windows 7 x64-users (serendipity and myself) don't have this problem, incredibly weird. To eliminate another obvious possibility, I saw in an earlier post that you use the full path for IconFile in xyplorer.ini. Does it make any difference if you put that file in the main directory (with XYplorer.exe) and only provide the file name for the IconFile value?

Ehhh, I screwed up In fiddling with the INI, I messed up the path. The path has been corrected, so the Sneak Peek and the title bar icons are showing as they were supposed to. HOWEVER, the task bar icon will keep changing every time I update XYplorer as it derives its icon from what is in "All Programs -> XYplorer" and that is more than a mild annoyance.

Bad news and good news can appear at the same time, unfortunately...

HOWEVER, the task bar icon will keep changing every time I update XYplorer as it derives its icon from what is in "All Programs -> XYplorer" and that is more than a mild annoyance.

It's an Explorer rather than an XYplorer thing which takes some fiddling as well as pinning the XYplorer icon to the taskbar to work around. If you're up to that, here are the steps:
1. Elevate XYplorer if you have UAC on.
2. Navigate to

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\

3. Create a second icon pointing to XYplorer.exe (either with a different name or in a different folder from the "official" XYplorer shortcut.
4. Change the icon of the new shortcut (as well as any other settings; see below).
5. In the Start Menu, right-click on this new shortcut and select Pin to Taskbar.

I use the above technique to assign a keyboard shortcut to XYplorer.exe's properties; this way, it doesn't get overwritten by XYplorer's setup program. I hope that you get to keep the custom icon for the taskbar icon, but I haven't tested the above steps for that scenario (the keyboard shortcut thing does keep working).
