grindax wrote:With regards to the auto-refreshing of icon overlays, this still isn't working. I've tested by opening a text file, that Dropbox is configured to sync, and made some changes. In XYplorer I see the overlay changing to the blue one which indicates that the file now needs to be uploaded to the cloud. But as soon as it has been uploaded, the overlay doesn't change to the green one. In order to see that I need to manually refresh.
Just to make sure: you have auto-refresh enabled, and we are not talking about URL or LNK items (which is a separate issue)?

Yes and yes.
OK, 2010 we have to do another DebugLog session...

.url and .lnk files normally have their own overlay (a little black arrow) to show they are LINKS. When Windows Explorer shows special icon overlays for these files, do the black arrow overlays disappear then??

Yes, when viewing these files in Windows Explorer, I can see only one overlay (the green tick from Dropbox).
Ah, that might explain the trouble. I was trying to show both at the same time. This is probably not possible.

grindax wrote:The latest beta doesn't fix this I'm afraid.

For example, here is what I see in Windows Explorer:
overlay_WE.png
Here is what I see in XYplorer 8.80.0001:
overlay_XY.png
This is on my Windows 7 x86 machine. My work PC running Windows XP never used to show any overlay at all for lnk and url files in XYplorer 8.80.0000.
Weird! Just to exclude any idiosyncrasies: Can other users using Icon Overlays confirm this:
1) correct Icon Overlays are not shown for LNK and URL files
2) before 8.80.0001 no Icon Overlays at all were shown for LNK and URL files

grindax wrote:Don, if I may suggest... you may want to install something like Dropbox to try this for yourself. There are a number of apps that update overlays, but just by taking the time to install that one app you will be able to verify and troubleshoot two separate problems: (1) url and lnk files don't display the overlay the app has assigned, and (2) dynamic updating of overlays doesn't work properly.

This will cost you nothing and the time investment into this exercise will be just minutes.

If you're averse to Dropbox, there are other apps which should be capable of demonstrating exactly the same thing.
I don't even have tortoise installed...

Presumably what you mean is that you use Portable TortoiseSVN. And that you have a philosophical reason for not installing software. And that you don't have test systems either where you could do so.

Which is too bad because this means you don't use XYplorer in the same kind of environment as most of your users. And you don't get to see how it works together with other software.

Oh well. I've done what I can in highlighting various issues. But I'm kinda losing interest as time goes on. It's like they say, "You can lead a horse to water..."
I doubt that "most of my users" use TortoiseSVN, but anyway I installed it. Only I have no idea how to get those overlay icons to life, and no time to read thru TortoiseSVN manuals. You have a tip for me?

PS: some time ago somebody posted a little step-by-step on this here, but I cannot find it.

grindax wrote:Don, you need to read the last few posts in this thread, including the one where you brought up tortoise, so that you understand the context correctly.

Because your last post makes no sense.

I was not suggesting that you install tortoise -- it has nothing to do with the matter at hand -- but that you install Dropbox or any other application that will assist you in troubleshooting the overlay problem. You shouldn't sit in your ivory tower expecting that the forum readers do all the leg-work and spoon-feeding for you.

btw, I think that things like displaying icons and overlays are pretty fundamental to a file manager. That XYplorer can't do these things correctly should be an embarrasment to you, and something you'd want to fix.
Haha.

My super-optimized forum-post speed-reading technique still leaves room for improvement, that's all. But thanks for your tips. I'll try to debug my embarrassment modules ASAP... :)

OK, nice thing the Dropbox! Overlay update works now. Could not repro issues with URL and LNK though. It just worked out of the box with v8.80.0001.
