Still cannot reproduce.

Sorry to be such a bother.
Just to be sure I just did the fresh steps again. From what I understand, every options should be the default ones so if you follow the steps, I can't see why you couldn't reproduce.

1 - file Funny photo original.jpg : thumbnail <=> photo <=> hover box » seems good but in fact blurry
2 - file Funny photo.jpg : thumbnail <=> photo but hover box <=> THUMBNAIL » not good shouldn't be the thumbnail !
It means XY doesn't read the file when displaying the hover box, just the embedded thumbnail (that I made special so there's no doubt it's the thumbnail). Depending on the resolution of the said thumbnail, the hover box shows blurry.

I hope you can reproduce so you can do something about it.

I did that. The images in that zip are not even rotated.

There seems to be a big misunderstanding and I'm at fault here.
This thread is finally not so much about the floating preview rotation (that works pretty well indeed) but about the way the floating preview is generated when the Auto-rotate preview is checked.
So just for now please forget about the photo orientation.
If you followed the steps I indicated, you should have seen the same thing I have : the floating preview showing the embedded thumbnail instead of the photo.
If so, you must agree that having a thumbnail showing a picture and the floating preview showing another one is a rather surprising event that should be addressed...
Solving this issue may solve the original point.

Update:
I'm using Windows 7 !
I don't see this behavior on a Windows 10 computer, which would explain why you can't reproduce.

I'm wondering if there could be some link with that other thread...
