Try one of these compiled .exes...

binocular222 compiled ones remap the right mouse button, not the middle one...

But note, you have to de-activate Hyper-V if you want to run e.g. VirtualBox*. And since Hyper-V is real server technology I thinks it's still lacking support for sound.

Other features worth looking at:
- new task manager
- storage pools
- file history (my favorite new functional feature)
- Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts
- and: yes, I do like the mail app

some content edits/updates

*: I consider Hyper-V to be some sort if a Type 1.5 Hypervisor because it "swallows" cpu's virtualization features once it is installed (actually, then guest and host become guest of the hypervisor Hyper-Y!).

Thanks for the tips. It seems in Win8 it's easier to find cooking recipes than any information about the installed software. :)

Anyway, mail is my next question. Nothing against the mail app, but I need to import my old emails and accounts (I have lots of both) from my XY machine (Outlook Express). Is it possible (if no I jump out of the window), and how?

PS: It seems to be difficult but possible: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 2cd53a180c

Connect via RDP instead of the Hyper-V Manager -> Sound :D

Yes, but afaik you need Outlook or an compatible mail client. The mail app is a simple local app client to online accounts. But I'm no expert in here (online and exchange only for > 15 years)

@highend: well, often it's the simple approach that.... cool.

OK, I got an idea: I'll install Thunderbird on my XP machine, then import all Outlook Express settings/mails to it, then migrate Thunderbird to Win8. Should work, right?

Yes. Oh wait: can't you "just" import your outlook.pst's from Win 8 (skipping the 'migration') using portable Thunderbird as highend is suggesting (yeah, I'm from the future..)?

Just use a portable version. After importing everything just copy it over. Should work flawlessly & no real need to "migrate" it to the new os.

No, Thunderbird imports only from OE on the same machine.

Didn't know that. Sounds like a somewhat strange restriction releated to hardcoded paths ...

Anyway, looking forward to hear what you think about the "new" Windows file explorer.

Next question: The following user name has been decided for me from the Gods of Windows 8.1:

Code: Select all

%USERNAME% = doles_000
So my Desktop now is in C:\Users\doles_000\Desktop. Great! :om: I'd rather have "Donald" there. Any chance?

E.g.: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/user-account-name-change

The better way would be to create a completely new user account named "Donald"...
