Default Folder

I've just upgraded to 13.40 from 8.7 (bought the lifetime deal) and I'm busy configuring.

How do I get the default folder view to apply to browsing machines on my LAN.

eg I don't want line numbers so they're gone on my PC but not on a networked drive.

I don't see a problem there. The default Folder View does not care about LAN or not LAN.

You're right, but so am I sort of.

Actual folders have respected the changes but when showing Computer or a view of the PCs on the LAN or the disks on one of those PCs I still get the line numbers. Is there a way I can get rid of line numbers universally?

Ah, you mean these ones. Yes, they are treated apart from normal file listings. Now: If you simply turn off Line Numbers while within such a view it should be remembered. Very simple.

Hmm. I'll turn them off as I find them then.

Since there doesn't see to be a designated suggestions group I'll dump a couple here:

1. A global setting to turn off line numbers
2. An option to transfer favourites into a catalog

If you right-click in the catalog and select Insert as New Category Here, you can create a category for your Favorite Folders or Favorite Files. Does that do what you want?

Hm, again you are asking about how to keep some setting. This makes me think. You know, in XYplorer all settings are always kept by default. So I suppose you did something actively to overwrite the settings that would normally be kept. Could it be that you enabled a default Folder View? If yes then: You normally don't need that, so you might delete this default Folder View, or disable Folder View Settings all together.

You are correct, I did have Enable Folder View Settings ticked, and I'd set a folder as the default view. I didn't realise that would be the effect.

It is doing what it says in the OLH under Default Folder but help files, in my opinion, are great if you know what you're looking for but no use otherwise. Can I suggest supplying a pdf along with the normal OLH its much more readable, and its exactly what a number of my component suppliers do (I develop using Delphi) and I find them far better.

I think that another problem is that the interface as you've designed it is counter intuitive to me. The way I write stuff things in that tools menu would be a global setting and override anything else. As it is you have two places where you set the columns for the list.

One thing I do like is the right click to keep the drop down there. I wrote my own drop down menu because I generally move the mouse diagonally and kept losing the menu.

Yes, these are difficult things you are mentioning. XY is an app that's been developed over 15 years now. So there is a historical dimension to its design, vulgo: "I would do it differently if I started this from scratch today." Still, the overall feedback I'm getting from users is that it is rather intuitive, especially with respect to its enormous number of features. Two layers of organization in a modern file manager: 1) Primary task: Manage the millions of files of the user. 2) Secondary task: Manage the file manager itself, the hundreds of functions. Not easy. Plan: Next year I will offer a meta-feature (I have no name yet for it) whereby the user can decide (with maximum granularity) which features/commands are shown in the interface. (A raw form of this already exists in Configuration / Features.)

I thought I was the only one to experience that

My main app is about the same age, started life in PICK went to Delphi 1 and has just suffered a total rewrite in Delphi 2006.

Brilliant - I tried to find a chm to pdf converter yesterday but failed.

I shall now go and convert the pdf to epub so I can transfer to my ereader for when I can't sleep
