A way to add to or manage catalog w/o being in cat already

Post by j_c_hallgren »

In checking out info for another thread, I realized that another access method to the catalog would seem valuable...that is, unless it's there and I just can't see it...sort of like how one can toggle favorite folder...or how one adds to Favorites in IE...

Lets' say that I'm in a folder that I've navigated to via clicking on tree...and I wish to add it to catalog...how would one do so easily via the keyboard? Or without moving focus to catalog? Or both? This is the condition that could use a bit of improvement, IMHO...

Could there be an option in the context menu to add current item, plus pick the desired category for it? Or a new main menu choice to access the catalog functions? Or maybe a toolbar icon? Something along those lines of thought...I think toolbar would be a good thing similar to LM or VF, etc...

That is, assuming one could also manage the catalog as one can manage lists via LM...similar to what "Organize Favorites" in IE allows...

The catalog is such a great thing but managing it still is a bit difficult..

I'm sure our other frequent posters will have some some input on these thoughts! :!:

I had the same thoughts before. But then there were options like dragging and dropping so I did not care so much. But you are right, context menus in tree and list to add items to catalog would be very useful. That way one can add more than one items to the catalog. But not sure how often one would do that.

I'm not much a 'drag n drop' guy...have made a few major mistakes too easily that way, so now avoid it in most cases...so in some cases, it means doing things a bit more convoluted or slowly, but have avoided doing some things that I didn't really intend to that way..

Actually, you can already do that, but those items are on the Catalog context menu! (that is, Add Selected Tree Item Here, Add Selected List Item(s) Here, and also Add Current AB Content Here)

I don't think they'll be added to the Tree/List ctxt menus, because it make sense to have them in Catalog, plus makes you set the Category also, while there should be a new "interface" to do so from Tree/List; besides those menus are already "quite full" and I don't think Don likes to add a lot more in there, if it can be done otherwise....

But yes, right now you have to focus the Catalog, and use your mouse if you don't have a way key to get the ctxt menu to pop up.
Maybe a few commands could be added to the Edit menu (that is, only the one from the Menu, but not be shown on List's ctxt menu) in a submenu "Catalog" or something like that, with "Add Selected Tree Item To Selected Category (catname)", etc ?

Oh!! . One of those things that slipped past me. Thanks, its quite handy. But anyway, i use to D&D items i wanted. So i guess for mousers its not a real big deal. But otherwise I can only think of shortcuts for adding from tree or list. But when CKS is here it shud be much easier.

I know that the full list context menu is quite full, but I see only three main entries on the short one (the "Info to Clip/Rename Spc/Move-Copy" one), so having a "Catalog" master/main entry there would be a reasonable choice...but even having that type of main menu on any Tree/List context menu would only add one line, and give much more flexability and usability, IMO...

I'd also envision a Catalog main menu in the Tools menu, likely near the List Mgmt one...that could invoke more of the management stuff, as compared to adding current selected entry, which is most likely function while in the tree/list, I would suspect.
