Show 'Selected' entry in Catalog in standard blue...

Post by j_c_hallgren »

Maybe I'll be in the minority on this one, but...when the focus is moved via Tab from Tree to List to Addr Bar to Catalog, I can see it very easily in three of the four places as it has the standard Windows blue highlight...but when in Catalog, it's not...yes, I'll admit that the entry is boxed with dashed lines...

However, at a quick glance, if one hit the Tab by error and moved to Catalog, finding focus (for me) isn't quite instant...and I'll also agree that selected entry may not be visible on list depending on scroll position, but if Catalog was marked as such, then process of elimination would normally make it as on list, where now it may be either list or the (less than ideally marked, IMO) Catalog, ok?
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

I know what you mean. The only reason why I did not use the standard coloring here is that the selected/focused item can easily get out of synch with the tree/list, because:
catalog selection -> tree/list adapt
tree/list selection -> catalog does NOT adapt

So I thought it was confusing to see a big fat blue catalog selection on a certain path when this path is not the current path anymore.
As a consequence I also had to add the little arrow symbol you see left of the selected/focused item to tell you which item is selected/focused when the catalog has not the focus (and hence no focus rectangle).

I admit it's a somehow half-cooked and unconventional way, and I think it has never been discussed here. I'd like to hear some more opinions first, but I can tell you already that I would not mind to change affairs to the standard way of coloring. Also some horizontal space would be gained then, because that arrow symbol would not be necessary anymore! :)

I had originally written a phrase/sentence about that triangle arrow, but removed it when I remembered that it doesn't really help locate (visually) where focus is currently, but only which entry it would be on when catalog is the current one of four places possible...if that makes sense...because I still have to see/notice the dashed boxed entry, which isn't always that obvious! Ok...maybe if you look more closely, or just recently intentionally moved focus to catalog, then finding it isn't as much of an issue...but I've ended up going places I didn't quite expect when I "lost" track of focus...which can happen easily when one comes back to XY after doing something in another session, or after a hibernate!

So I like the triangle arrow, and think it should stay, just that I'd like that sorta ugly blue color in the box also!

Maybe it would be easier to locate if the catalog autoscrolled to the focused item to make it more visible. As a matter of fact one can also get lost in the list mode. Because if an item is focused or selected and you set the scroll away from this selected/focused item then locating this with tab hits can be a problem too (luckily there is the double click which takes you to the selected item). maybe autoscroll to selected item when cycling with tab or F6 could be a solution. But on the other hand the scroll position is lost which can be annoying too. hmmm maybe just autoscroll for catalog and not the list.

I'd agree with this! I currently have less than 10 entries in catalog so it's presently not an issue really, but maybe 98% of the time, I already have the triangle in view anyway, so autoscroll wouldn't affect it...that is, if any autoscroll only occurred when triangle was totally out of view...as long as it's visible, I'd want my position to stay unchanged...so if arrow is on entry #9, and top entry visible is #3, keep top at #3...maybe just scroll it enough so arrow becomes last line visible?

I'd love to have a shortcut key that scrolls the currently focused view to the focus (if that makes sense) and a variation of that key to scroll all views to their currently focused items.
Used to update to the latest beta every day. Now I have children instead…

What about Shift+F6 or Ctrl+F6 to move the focus into the focus of the currently focused control! :) I think they are both free and would fit this purpose quite well!

Sounds good to me, is this in 4.60.0021?

hmm.. did what?

Also, not sure I got it all but.. why not simply have the Catalog's item highlighted when the Catalog has focus, just like when hoovering on drag&drop operation ??

I think Don meant that the Catalog now has the "standard Windows blue highlight" instead of that dotted box around the focused item.
