All suggested tools above exhibit a singular fault: slow.
All text-based tools are slow to handle a significant size of info, say, articles from New York Times for the last 10 years.
After years' search, I conclude the only viable solutions must be binary-based with built-in SQL.
Just my 0.002 cents.

while doing some search, i found zim desktop wiki - http://zim-wiki.org/,

i think this is a contender because we can fully use xyplorer capabilities with it.

you can carry zim with you as well with a portable version

with zim you can just use xyplorer normally because all data is stored in plain text files.

Online wise I've resorted to trello as it really is a quick way to keep consolidated notes. It allows export of the data and has an accessible API, so I imagine some genius could come up with a desktop sync and text indexing search this way.... but I still enjoy the simplicity of trello (even if the search/preview needs improvement).

I'm curious, why do you focus on a desktop/xyplorer based option, when knowledge management is really a different focus than file management. I may have missed something... I have to speed read with the limited time I have today.
