Very slow thumbnail display of Nikon D800 images
Hi, has anyone else experienced very slow thumbnail display of .NEF thumbnails (mine are from a Nikon D800) - they are taking around 4 seconds each to load? Windows Explorer displays them almost immediately even for new images and I have got the latest Nikon NEF RAW CODEC loaded.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a fast PC with 8Gb RAM.
I've tried various options in the Configuration menu; once the thumbnails have been cached, performance is OK.
Is it the CODEC that's slow? Perhaps someone knows of a faster one (though I've had no problem with my current one with any other app).
Many thanks,
Geoff

Could you send me one sample NEF by email or provide me a download link?

Good news! The next BETA (v12.90.0003) should bring big improvement to the speed of thumbnailing RAW formats.

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Yes your response times are a tad faster than the IT industry average!
I've downloaded Beta 12.90.0004 and although it's quicker, it's still about 2 to 3 seconds each and the thumbnails don't seem as clear as they did with the full release version. Would 12.90.0003 be any different (I assume each release is incremental)?
I have also noticed that it's very hard to interrupt XY once it is trudging through a new folder creating thumbnails until it has finished all those in view.
The NEF files vary from 38-60Mb each (depending upon whether they are straight from the camera or have been edited), so I hear you saying "well, what do you expect?", but as I said before, Windows Explorer has no trouble so I'd expect XY to do likewise.
Thanks, Geoff

1. Hmm, that's not the numbers I wanted to see. So I assume Explorer makes use of embedded thumbnails, and XY does not. To verify this I would need a NEF.GBaylis wrote:Yes your response times are a tad faster than the IT industry average!

2. Press ESC repeatedly or even hold it pressed.
OK; I found some in the web... going to the test lab now...

I cannot get slow NEF thumbnails here. All are instant.
Maybe it's the codec. I'm using FastPictureViewer Codec Pack for years now, and it is fast.

Please ensure that Configuration | Thumbnails | Super-fast thumbnails is ticked.
Also tick Configuration | Thumbnails | Show dimensions of original image on thumbnail. This will help me understanding what's going on at your end.

Thanks! Tested them on XP SP3 (with FastPictureViewer Codec Pack) and the thumbnails come instantaneously (even with super-fast OFF!). So, it seems to be the codec.

Cool!
So it was a double-ended problem with a double-ended solution: You got better codecs, and XY got better code. Win win!
