A find "File Type" option missing in XY(?) + W2K E

Post by j_c_hallgren »

Ok, here I go again... :?

On W2K Expl, when you do a search by Type, you get a drop-down with all the various icon/desc of file types you can look for, so if you're not sure of what a particular extension is, like "xyz", you can see it by pgrm name usage, or icon you recognize, maybe...BUT...it doesn't show the actual "xyz" in list, so if you think you know it but want to verify, you can't...so.....a strike against M$!

Now is there a similar type option in XY? If not, would that be a good thing? I think so...because some of these more obscure file types used by certain products are not as easy to remember as ".mp3", ".jpg", etc!

I'm thinking of list format like what you see in "File type" tab of "Folder Options" of "Tools", but that shows complete list which takes a bit of time to load, unlike list in Win Expl..

This was one of my first few posts here...and it never got any replies, so I thought I'd bump it...given that it's still a valid wish of mine...I presume this would require reading thru the registry which may be a real problem, and if that's true, let me know, ok? Thanks!
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

I kinda like the idea but I'm not sure I entirely get it, can you be a bit more specific?

More specific? I'm not sure how...but...In Win Expl, when you want to search for a particular file type (extension), you get a drop-down menu where you pick the one you wish...and it has other info describing what that file type is...for example, you see the icon for "address book" and the description is "address book file" so user really doesn't have to know the true 3 char extension...given that some extensions used are well known, like BMP or JPG, but others are somewhat obscure, this could help in finding the desired files, but I'd also list the actual 3 char extension in XY.

I think I get what you're talking about now. the problem was that I hate the default for Windows search function and always stick it onto "advanced" in my profiles, so I've never come across this.

Where would this fit into the search panel?

That part I'm not sure of at all...just the ability to access that type of data within XY would be helpful, I believe...but it does involve reading Registry data, which may be the show stopper...
