Issues with XYPlorer and Office 2013

Post by rudek »

I am running W8 x64, Office 2013 and XYPlorer 2.80.0000. I have two issues:

1) when double clicking on a Word file in XYPlorer, the file opens, but the SaveAs dialog takes about 60 seconds to open and fill in. If I open the same file from the Windows Explorer, the SaveAs dialog opens in a few seconds.

2) when double clicking on an Excel file in XYPlorer, the file does not open and I get the message "There was a problem sending the command to the program.", Excel loads but the file is not opened. I tried Tools-> File Associations, but it did not help. If I open the same file from the Windows Explorer, Excel opens the file normally.

Any ideas?

Hi and welcome,

I am confused as to what an "SaveAs" dialog of an Office application can be related to XYplorer.
I'm running the very same setup and have no problems to open either MS Word or Excel files by double-clicking in XY.

Or do you mean that just the opening/loading of the office files does take longer?
Have you tried to add the XYplorer.exe to list of excluded-from-scan processes in Windows Defender?

Thanks Filehero,

So am I, but that is what I observed :)

No, opening the files takes the same time in XYPlorer as in Win Explorer. The SaveAs dialog in Word takes 17s to open if the file was opened in XYPlorer and it takes 2-3s to open if the same file is opened in Windows Explorer. I am using an I7 with a SSD so the PC itself is pretty fast.
Have you tried to add the XYplorer.exe to list of excluded-from-scan processes in Windows Defender?
I have tried that, but both issues are still present the same as before.

I just did another test. The SA dialog does not even take a second to come up when the doc file is loaded via double-click either in XY or Windows Explorer. Strange.
To exlude it's a hickup in XY you can try a fresh installation (to do that just copy the both XY exes in any temp directory, all XY meta storage is self-contained).

I still wonder why you observe the SA dialog to need "a few seconds" even in your fastest Windows Explorer scenario, though. Is the directory the SA dialog is pointing to a local one or by any chance a remote/shared folder?

Thanks again,

Tried that, still exactly the same behavior as described in the first post.

It is a normal directory on the local SSD, so it should be really fast.

Did you do your tests on Windows 8 x64 and Office 2013? BEcause with Office 2013 I get these issues, but I did not have any problems with Office 2010.

Any other ideas?

Yes, "literally" same setup: Win8 x64 Pro, Office 2013 Home & Student, Data on SSD.

Not really. I think, I would try a reinstall of Office 2013 next (with backing up the Windows installation before, of course)

Thanks Filehero....
I have already re-installed Office 2013 last week, still the same issues. This is really a tricky one :)

Now it's getting annoying.

Fresh install of core setup Win 8 (Trial), Office 2013 and XY in Hyper-V/VirtualBox?

I'd suggest the two of you compare information from Help > Various Information - especially before you start spending time re-installing OSes and Office.

I could see it being related to running XY as administrator or some goofy permissions about where XY or the documents reside.

I'm on Windows 7 with Office 2010 and it doesn't exhibit this behavior, so I'm not a particularly useful data point at this time. ;)

EDIT: It might be worth experimenting with the same document as well - or comparing an empty one from both configurations.

thanks.
The problem is that the two issues were not present until I upgraded XY to 12.70 some weeks ago. My documents are all in standard Windows folders, I checked Help > Various Information and there is nothing there to indicate any issues.

My re-install proposal was driven by my own lazyness. With both Win 8 and Office 2013 it's more a less a 'one-click' background job.

Do you still have a e.g. 12.60 installer to do a parallel fresh install to "really" knock it down?

But TheQwerty is right when suggesting also to check the source file correlation. So it does happen with any Word file?
Nevertheless, I suspect some sort of "Windows" thingie. If you don't mind I could offer to look how one of your files is "acting" over here on my system.

Do you have any pre 12.70 XY downloads you can do a portable install with so you can verify that this problem did not actually happen until that particular update?

My logic here is that if this is verified, it might help Don track down the problem by comparing the code changes between these versions.

This is just a stab in the dark...

Hi guys,

this is what I did: I found a XY V12.50 on my disk and installed it. It warned me that I am downgrading from 12.80, which I accepted.

1) when running 12.50, both my issues (long wait times on SA dialog in Word and the Excel warning) are gone
2) when running 12.80 again, both my issues are present again

I ping-ponged between 12.50 and 12.80 several times, and the findings are consistent: 12.50 is fine, 12.80 has the two issues.

I hope that helps to pinpoint a solution.

Thanks,

Weird! No Office related changes were added between those two versions. :|

I have both 12.50 and 12.80 installed as full (not portable) installs in two adjacent folders. Assuming that both versions use the same settings (which I guess is correct because all the settings look identical), then it is indeed weird. Hopefully you can think of a solution anyway.
