Cannot preview .rm files
Cannot preview .rm files
Can any of guys preview realmedia video files?? I am trying out KMPlayer and it cant play .rm in XY but otherwise can play in its own player. But not sure if this problem is XY's or KMPlayer's. I also included it in Tools>List management>File associations but it still doesnt work. If it works for you guys then please let me know what players you use. Thanks. I am on version 0041.
I think you can't preview them simply because *.rm is not one of the format listed in XY Previewed Formats, so XY show them through the Raw View mode no matter what.
And for that to change, it's up to Don
The XY file association isn't for what's previewed or not, but which app will be used to open files (on dbl-click/Enter).
Besides that, to have XY be able to preview RM format you'll need to have the codec installed, so if KMPlayer does install RM codecs then it will work, if it doesn't then it probably won't... But there is a RealMedia Alternative that exists, just like there's a QuickTime Alternative (I got them both, so XY can/could preview them both with no problem)

Yep, Jacky is right.
The simple test is always: if WMP can play it then XY can play it. And it will play it when I add the extension.
I'm thinking about letting you add extensions...
BTW, which Real Player are you using? I hate this app since many years for its habit to pack zillions of garbage into my registry, and hence do not have it. OTOH some sites only offer RM for their stuff, so I miss it. So, is it still that bad to install RP?

My KMPlayer can play the realmedia and quicktime files but XY preview says it cannot decode. I have included the extensions in both file associations thing and the new ini "MediaPreviewCustomExtensions" thing. BTW is ".rm.mov." the right way??
I tried the simple test suggested by Don and WMP cannot play this. So i guess XY can preview only if WMP can play it?? or?
Also, i dont have any realmedia or quicktime player. KMPlayer has those codecs in its own folder and hence can play in its own player. But do you know if i should copy those codecs elsewhere in the system for XY to see it??

You guys might wanan check Real Alternative
It comes with Media Player Classic (excellent piece of software, all one need when it comes to video player is MPC & VLC, those 2 are the best!) and will add support for Real format so then can be played/previewed by XY aswell, and it works fine.
I have both Real & Quicktime alternative and they work just fine, with MPC or XY

(Neither in XY)
What's the magic additional setting after installation?
Actually, I just (re-)installed the latest version, don't think I had the last one for Real, and I can still preview RM files in XY with nothing special to do or anything...

I can preview both .rm and .mov in XY now. All had to do was to uninstall all media players i had and cleaned-up my registery with ccleaner. After reboot i downloaded K-lite mega codec pack and installed it. It has media player classic and other imp stuff like alternative realmedia and quicktime bundled with it. So it was easy stuff to do. Warning: its 32 mb file and after install it is 95mb biiig. But I dont care because now my XY can preview almost all media filetypes i have come across.
Yeah, i uninstalled WMP too. Dont know about Winamp, keep it and try installing Klite. I use ccleaner after any uninstall, hasnt screwed anything since 2 yrs now. It makes a copy of your registry before it changes it. I recommend it to be safe.admin wrote: You uninstalled WMP as well, right?
Also WinAmp? (I'd like to keep that)
And you can recommend ccleaner?

Did you try it in different computers??admin wrote:Partly!surrender wrote:Did it work Don??
I can play RM files in XY now, but only audio, not video...(Media Player Classic shows the video).
And MOV does open but not play.
There is something more to it than simply codecs. because i still cant figure out the problem with my ogg files. My PC (WinXP pro) at work plays them fine while my laptop (WinXP home) doesnt.
