Remote drives

Post by Rhywun »

I'd like to give this program a try, but I can't seem to view the contents of remote drives (mapped drives) very easily. Last time I closed the program I was at a mapped drive. Now when I restart, it hangs a good 2 to 3 minutes before I can do anything. Any solution to this problem? I've played around with the auto-refresh settings that I found in another post, but it has no effect. The program freezes whenever I switch to a mapped drive.

Check your configuration:
General
Switch off "Show folder sizes in file list" and
Advanced
Switch on "Use generic icons for super-fast browsing" and
Switch on "But only in network places"

Those are neat features if you need them, but have them set otherwise slows down browsing by factors depending on number of folders, number of files aso....

No improvement. Navigating a remote machine is still a painfully slow process. And the "Use generic icons" option doesn't appear to have any effect anyway, whether "network only" or not. I always see the custom application icons.

Then I'm out of ideas for the moment.
These settings did the trick for my "slow" mapped network drive.
As you can see in other posts (I couldn't find 'em myself right now) I had a folder on a mapped drive, that "froze" XY for about 30 secs on startup, when I closed it with the current tab focussing it.
I just checked startup time with that folder again and it's still down to a reasonable 3 secs, which is ok for me. That folder contains about 4000 files and 25 subfolders.

My network mapped drives (just a simple windows server share...) are just a little laggier than normal local drives. Takes maybe a second the first time I view, then it's half a second or so switching between directories on that drive. There are over a thousand folders and tens of thousands of files with individual directories containing up to several hundred. Nested directories go up to 15 deep (I try to educate...), so I'm baffled by people's issues. I guess I'm just lucky, but even switching on those "slow" options above only take directory changing up to a second per change absolute max, usually not much more than the half second.

What sort of directory/file structure is your mapped drive? Size? What kind of server? Slow or fast hardware? OS?
