Recent Loc, Oper, Hotlist Menus: Very Slow w removable drvs

Post by Jerry »

Nearly always, when I try to use the menus for recent locations, operations, hotlist, there is a very long wait for the menu to come up. I usually click and have to do something else until I see it appear. This crimps the usefulness of these great features. I think it happens in all places where the menu items have those icons indicating current accessibility of the corresponding path. I use the maximum limit for number of menu entries.

I'm wondering if the delay, in my case, occurs when XYplorer tries to determine the status for those paths in the menus but gets slowed down by my many attached USB drives, most of which have to wake up from sleep after inactivity. Also, not all drives are assigned fix drive letters and they may connect again under a different letter, which unfortunately makes their previous paths in the menus unusable and flagged as unavailable. [That's a different issue, I know, but just mentioning it if it's also a factor in the slowness.]

If my conjecture is correct, is there any way currently to configure XYplorer to not update those status icons? I would much rather have the menus pop up crisply than see updated status icons.

You could enable generic icons, but I don't recall a way to do that for just removable drives.

You could also try setting Portable File Icons for all of your removable drives, but I'm not positive they will be used in all those locations or offer any type of noticeable speed up.

Ok, I think the generic icon setting was the ticket! In particular, I've enabled "Use generic icons" AND "Apply to all controls". It seems I don't need to also uncheck "Include Removable" drives under Auto-Refresh (which is enabled).

I've been fooled before but the problem seems to have gone away after giving it some sample usage, at least with Recent Locations and Recent File Operations. Thanks.

I don't have "Use generic icons" ticked and cannot reproduce any lags on removable drives. :|

Have you tried it with 14 USB drives attached via 3 hubs where the drives go to sleep when inactive? My recent location menu is large with paths across the various drives.

No. :)

So these kind of drives probably should be treated like network drives: easy with icons. That would be a lot of work to add because I never expected this kind of problem. So: maybe later.

Well, it seems to have gone away by applying generic icons across the board to all controls, which is an acceptable solution for me.

If it bothers you enough to remedy it, I'll be happy to test out the change. ;-)
