Long filename & long filepath Support & Volume Shadow Copy
I like to know if XYplorer supports:
1. Does it support Long filename or long filepath (more than 260+ characters)
2. Does it also support Volume Shadow Copy
3. What is the difference between Copy and Backup?
I noticed that when I copy a folder, it does not keep Creation Date, but if I backup a folder, it can keep Creation date and all else.
THANKS!!!

Re: Long filename & long filepath Support & Volume Shadow Co
Hi and welcome,
1.
Yep. Tick Configuration | Controls and More | Miscellaneous | Support overlong filenames (is ticked by default).
2.
Hm, never tried. Anybody else?
3.
See http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9479
There is lots of overlap between the two. I personally see and use them as two independent copy configurations. Especially when you enable "Custom Copy" for "Copy" operations which will give them the same engine and interface as "Backup". (The "Custom Copy" engine is always (hardcoded) used for "Backup" operations.)

Re: Long filename & long filepath Support & Volume Shadow Co
Thanks bro.
I'm going to use Backup operation, because I intend to copy my directories from D Drive to another removable J Drive, but I need to keep all dates, which includes Date Modified, Date Created, Date Accessed.
When I looked at the Copy operation, I ticked "keep all dates" in the configuration, but when I copied over, it did not keep the folders Creation Date.
So, what did I do wrong?

Re: Long filename & long filepath Support & Volume Shadow Co
I noticed that if I move items one by one dates are preserved, but if I move a bunch of files only the focused+selected item mantains its timestamps. Actually, this behaviour as caught my attention for a while, but since my destinations are usually junctions to other drives I thought it was something NTFS-related deep down. I'll do further tests if necessary.admin wrote:Really?Works fine here. Anybody can test this please?

Just tested under Win7: Not here. Please re-test!Marco wrote:I noticed that if I move items one by one dates are preserved, but if I move a bunch of files only the focused+selected item mantains its timestamps. OK, got it! Actually it had nothing to do with Win7. Does this description match the conditions of your bug?admin wrote:Wow, under Win7 I can confirm this!jaydee wrote:When I looked at the Copy operation, I ticked "keep all dates" in the configuration, but when I copied over, it did not keep the folders Creation Date.![]()

What's going on here? This feature has reached the state of total perfection years ago and now this! Isn't it enough that Dortmund loses! What a sunday...
Code: Select all
! Custom Copy | Preserve All Item Dates: Did not work with folders
whose copies were auto-renamed on collision. Fixed.

Oh, you'll prefer unpredictable, undeterministic, not reproducible then?

Re: Long filename & long filepath Support & Volume Shadow Co
Sorry, I was away outstation these few days.
1. May I ask if I should use the Backup option or the Copy option if I just need to copy the folders from D Drive to J Drive?
2. Also, when I choose "Continue" on Failure, is there any way I will know which folder/file failed in copying over?
3. Is this shown in the Summary Report or the Log file?
4. Under what circumstance will there be failure occurring and if cable loose or power outrage situation, can I resume where it left off, or I will have to start the Copy process all over again from scratch?
5. Finally, Volume Shadow Copy is a feature of Xyplorer or not?
PS: The "keep all dates" feature is working. I did not tick to use Custom Copy, that's why the config did not register. My mistake.

No, there really was a bug under certain conditions and I fixed it.jaydee wrote:PS: The "keep all dates" feature is working. I did not tick to use Custom Copy, that's why the config did not register. My mistake.
1. Depends on what you want. Initially (factory defaults) they are configured slightly differently, but you can configure them to be totally identical. So to make sure: there is no prinicipal difference between them, they are just two custom copy configurations with different names.
2. Yes, the Report button tells you everything; and the log (of you enabled that).
3. see 2.
4. You have to restart the whole process, but what actually happens then depends on your settings: if you do "overwrite if newer" actual copying will start where it was interrupted.
5. No.

Re: Long filename & long filepath Support & Volume Shadow Co
Thanks much for your reply.
1. Based on your reply to item 4, it sets me thinking. Can I then use either the Custom Copy/or Backup operation and configure it to "overwrite if new" to sync two Drives or two folders? The only setback is that older files already on both drives/folder, if they're deleted, cannot be sync into identicals.
2. Can the Backup operation do identical sync? Meaning keeping both identical? And if there is a way to schedule it to backup, that would be perfect.
Right now, I'm using FreeFileSync to do syncing, and though it is free, it is one of the most slick software I've ever come across and I've donated to it. (btw, just for knowledge and my apologies, I digress, it does Volume Shadow Copy and handle long filenames - two of the most important features that I need, because of Outlook.dat database and very very long internet shortcuts, and I've a ton of these long urls).
