Disable auto selection of recently used folders

Post by robertcollier4 »

Hi - when I am navigating around folders - XYPlorer starts its selection (and focus) on folders that I have recently entered.

I would like the focus to always start out nothing selected. How can I do this? I have been unable to find anything like this to disable in the Configuration options.

Cool, so you fonud out How to tweak XYplorer.ini (http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3543).

do you find this default behavior irritating? I think about turning it off by default.

Don, I also became aware of this some time ago and have found it irritating (kind of: it knows better what I want then I do myself - association with MS intended). Nice to have learned now that this is tweakable (must have overseen this in change history).

I like that feature very much... It allows me to see where I was last, when I entered a tree. The only thing to make it easier for the user would be: elevate it to the gui :)

UI keyboard navigation should always be consistent - pushing the same keys in the same window should always do the same thing. I usually end up remembering where my folders are - and I navigate quickly through them by pushing "Down Down Down Enter" if I want to get to the 4th folder. Or I remember the folders by name and I push "Pr" "Enter" really quickly if I want to enter C:\Program Files when I am in C:\.

This setting being on breaks that consistency. It means that the cursor will always be at an undetermined (random) location. So the setting should be off by default because it disorients the user each time they enter a folder since they do not know what to expect what the state of the program and cursor will be. Things shouldn't move around so much.

Thanks.

The previous behavior matches that of Windows Explorer (at least in Win 7), so I think any user coming from WE is going to find the new behavior frustrating.

That combined with the number of requests for this feature and the amount of time that the old behavior was in place, leaves me doubtful that defaulting to the new behavior is in the majority's best interest.

Just in case you are not aware of it: Since few hours a new Beta 11.90.0212 is available (http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 100#p81100), in which this option can easily be activated in Tools > Configuration > Tree and List > Select last used subdirectory:

The option is OFF by default.

Windows Explorer has this?! Wow, indeed I can see something similar there (win7). Did not know it. Still tend to keep it OFF.

I simply adore this feature! It's so easy to open a tab, a folder, and you immediately see where you were yesterday, even what was the last selected/focused file. It spares me a lot of time and wandering around looking for something I don't see first glance. Now, I can't live without it anymore, so I'll keep it ON :D
