Size col = Space used in KB rounded up?

Post by j_c_hallgren »

I'm putting this here as not sure where best to ask...I was trying to match up some entries in Recycle Bin between XY and Win Explorer...the entry I was looking at was a bit different between the two...948KB on XY and 960KB in W-E...so looked at properties tab in XY...saw that the 960 was Space Used...ok...so how do I display THAT in size col instead of actual size? Maybe I'm having bad eyesight tonight... :oops: -or- is it not possible? I have size as "KB rounded up" but that doesn't do it.

And I need to use W-E as it shows true name in Recycle but XY allows me to preview it, so both methods are needed...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Well, simply select "clusters" in multiply in your head with the clustersize of you harddisk :lol:
No, "Space Used" is currently missing from the size column. I should add that, as one toggle applying to all size formats (bytes, KB, MB etc). Shouldn't I?

BTW: "KB rounded up" is mimicking Explorer's way of calculating KBs, and I think it's okay because when you round down anything < *.5 then files < 0.5 KB would be shown as "0 KB".

I'd much appreciate having that as some sort of a separate toggle!
As there are times when one, unfortunately, has to venture back into Win Expl...and attempting to locate a matching file when all one has to compare file is file size, this comes into play...and some folks may be most familiar with W-E method, so seeing the true size is unusual...

Also, as you had listed "rounded up" as matching Expl in Help, and it doesn't really now, that could be confusing... :wink:

Thanks for the prompt attention as always! :D

But are you sure that WE is showing the space used? That's new to me...

Hummm! :roll: Seems that it may be ONLY when we're looking at the...drum roll....Recycle Bin!

Update: Yes, I've looked a various other folders...but RB is the one that differs...so maybe only use a diff calc there?

I'm not sure it should be in the Size Column Format, since it's not really a format option, more a "what size do you want" option...

Why not say that if "Report the disk spaced used" is checked, then it does also work for the Size column on files? Would actually make even more sense since right now, with this option, the Size column report both Size, for files, and Spaced used, for folders. Which could seems "weird"/inconsistent ?

I had briefly considered this...but that implies also that IF I wished to switch my details list column from actual to used, I would need to open Config and switch there as compared with a toggle via the View menus, right? And which is more user friendly?

I agree that there should be consistency between folders/files, however, I've not been aware of a difference...if there is/was, I've not noticed it...

And as hopefully noted from my prior "update", after looking at various folders, I was only able see a discrepancy for files in the Recycle folder, so maybe something unique there...

I will add it to the bottom of the Size Column Format menu, after a separator. So it's also on the right-click of the Size column header. (You hate that, I know, but it's real cool.)

PS: and soon you can define your own keyboard shortcut for it...

On 2nd thought I'd rather keep the two things apart. Because I find it very natural to have directory sizes in "space used" (that's what you want to know here usually), and files sizes in actual content bytes.

Ok...now I'm definitely confused :?
On 5.10.48 with "KB round up", I have a folder with two files:
1) 49.31KB size & 64KB used -> shows as 50KB ( :?: ".31" rounds up? but it's 50,490 bytes)
2) 397.35KB size & 400KB used -> shows as 398KB
No matter if I have "report disk size used" on/off, I still see 447KB as size when looking at folder in list from next level up...properties for it show as 446.66Kb and 464KB used...

I'd personally like it to be consistent at both folder/file and user selectable...having it mixed can add to confusion, IMHO, as one adding up files manually from list would then not be able to match to folder size...by having them both, by user option, either in size or used, one could validate totals easily.

1. "rounded up" means always round up (else I would have called it "rounded")

2. your cluster size appears to be 16 KB. so everything you mention is alright and correct.

3. concerning confusion check out after next upload. it came out nice.

(I'll put this here instead of creating new thread in bug)

So...I tried it out on above mentioned folder combo...I was in the folder and switched to "space" via title menu...so col entries changed from 50 & 398 to 64 & 400...good so far..went up to parent level...(as config, I don't normally show size for folders)...and selected same folder...while title was "space", the value that popped in was 448 instead of 464! :?

I REALLY do like the way you implemented this wish! :D (other than above mentioned issue, of course :wink: )

One tweak requested: Put the toggle on TOP of space format choices in menu instead of bottom, as one would likely use it much more often than changing KB/MB/etc, and on bottom, takes a bit more mouse action to accurately hit it...if on top, once could simply slide right after selecting Size in menu.
Same idea for DATE format menu...put AGE on top, as other choices tend to be set and forget, while Age is a toggle that I use much more often.

Sorry...I just didn't think that 64+400=448 was correct math... :wink:

BTW, any comments on my other idea of flipping size/date menu order to make access to toggles somewhat easier?
