16x9 Thumbnails squished
Hi, I've been experiencing one issue with the display of only certain thumbnails where the original picture is taken in a wide screen mode 16x9 at a resolution of 4320 x 2430 (jpg). As you can see from the attached screen clips (attach 1) of the thumbnails in XYplorer the upper and lower section has a dark border and it may be hard to tell but the picture in the thumbnail is actually squished to where it is not proportional.
The picture itself is fine (i.e., proportional) and displays fine in MDBU or Irfanview. The thumbnail should actually take up the real estate of the blackened area as well to be at the proper aspect ratio. Thumbnails of pictures taken at other resolutions are displayed just fine (e.g., 4x3 ratio, 4320 x 3240). I was wondering if any of you camera smart and XY heavies may have any ideas on why this is? My settings are all typical. Super-fast thumbs unchecked, enable shell thumbs checked, enable folder thumbs checked, etc - we can only provide 3 attachments. When I take a 4x3 (4320 x 3240) resolution photo and then use Irfanview to crop it to a 16x9 at 4330x2430 resolution, the thumbnail is displayed just fine (attach 2). For other wallpapers and pictures at 16x9 ratio, the thumbnails are displayed absolutely fine. I'm not using any external codecs like Sagethumbs or others discussed on the forum. Now, this is the part the really bugs me, the thumbnails for the same photos display fine in that inept Explorer in Windows 7 (see screen clip attach 3). It's not a huge deal but it is a bit annoying when you like to view numerous photos. I don't always use the 16x9, 4330x 2340 mode on the camera but sometimes it's nice since it is the aspect ration of my new monitor and most other new monitors these days. I've tried clearing caches, going to super-fast thumbs and back and going to other size thumbs but nothing seems to help. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any ideas or help would be really appreciated. I can provide the EXIF data from a typical camera photo as well.
Thanks,
Ken

Ken

I use Wide Screen ratio myself all the time and have no problem with my pics. Maybe your thumb cache is somehow corrupt. Did you already try to refresh some of the problem thumbs?

Re: 16x9 Thumbnails squished
Thanks for the reply Don. Yes, I've cleared the cache a number of times to see if it fixed the issue and unfortunately it didn't. I did it again moments ago with no success. The resolution of this particular camera at 16x9 is 4320x2432 which I thought was a bit off from 16x9. Doing the calcs, I thought it should be 4320x2430 - 2 pixels off. You can check that by doing the 16x9 ratio of course (e.g., a standard monitor these day may be 1920x1080 (1.777777) which is the same as 4320x2430, not 4320x2432. Could it be that the very small difference in the ratio (2 pixels on the y axis) or some other camera setting is causing XYplorer to display the thumbs as they are above - squished with the black border but not in Explorer? As I said above, the other thumbs for wallapaper at 1920x1080 display fine or when I crop a photo taken with the same camera at 4320x3240 down to 4320x2430 also displays just fine.
Thanks again,
Ken

Re: 16x9 Thumbnails squished
I don't know if this may help in troubleshooting what's going on with the thumbnails, but I took one of my pics at (4320x2432 res) which the thumbnail displays improperly in XYplorer and I opened it in Irfanview. I then saved the picture in 4320x2430 resolution. The thumbnail diplayed properly see attach 1. But, then I refreshed the cache and the same picture that displayed properly now displayed improperly. See attach 2.

Re: 16x9 Thumbnails squished
Yes I will. What's the best method to do that? PM doesn't seem to allow me to send an attachment like a picture and the file was too big to attach in the normal post.

Sent to support. It's about 4.6 Meg. Let me know if it didn't come through for whatever reason.

OK, the pic you sent me works just fine. I must say I have no idea what's going wrong at your end.
I still think it's the cache. Try copies of the pictures in another folder...

Re: 16x9 Thumbnails squished
Wow, so the thumbnail for that picture I sent shows fine on your computer. I copied a few of those pictures to another directory and the thumbs show the same way in XYplorer - squished with the black border. It's got me baffled more so because I forgot to mention that it's not just on one computer. These 16x9 picture thumbsnails show the same way on my 3 computers - 2 desktops and 1 laptop - all with Windows 7 x64. Don, you use one of the picture codecs if I remember correctly, don't you? Was it FastPictureViewer codec and do you think I should try it out? I've tried the free one, Sagethumbs and that didn't make a difference.
For info only: I did view the thumbnails in Irfanview and they display fine and I also just loaded and ran the portable FastStone Image Viewer and they also show properly in that as well.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: 16x9 Thumbnails squished
I use FastPictureViewer codec, but for JPEGs it is not necessary, they are supported by Windows GDI.
How are your JPEGs displayed in the Preview tab (Info Panel)?

Re: 16x9 Thumbnails squished
Hi Don, the photos themselves display fine in Preview, Floating Preview and Full Screen Preview. I temporarily installed XY on an old computer with XP that I'm passing down to my daughter and the same thumbnails for 16x9 photos displayed fine - no bars and not squished.
So I have 3 computers all with the same operating system Win 7 x64 that display the 16x9 photo thumbnails improperly. I have no graphics software on these computers other than Irfanview and I put a portable FastStoneViewer on one of them just to see if it displayed thumnails properly and it did as does Irfanview's thumbnail viewer. Very strange...I've tried messing with Windows 7 folder settings and of course the XY thumbnails settings with no luck. I'd make some registry changes if that was the issue or even recopy key Windows files if I knew that was the problem. It is odd though that this issue is happening with 3 computers.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: 16x9 Thumbnails squished
OK, seems to be a GDI bug that only surfaces with larger images (in square pixels). I cannot explain why Explorer does not show the bug. Apparently Explorer serves himself an improved version of GDI.
Anyway, I can do something to make the bug disappear for images up to your size (4320 x 2432).

Re: 16x9 Thumbnails squished
Wow, and hunt it down you did! Thanks Don your fix worked like a charm. I updated 2 of the 3 computers with 11.70.0004 and after refreshing the cache the thumbnails for those high resolution 16x9 photos displayed in proper proportion and without the black bars. I'm glad it turned out not to be a "just me thing". I suppose once you saw that I had no issues on an old XP laptop, it got you wondering. XYplorer - one step closer to perfection in a file manager, if it isn't already!
Thanks so much,
Ken
