slowness to get confirmation dialog and actual deletion

Post by Terry Byrne »

i had some spare time to do some timings and here are the average results.
each timing was performed after a system restart, no av monitoring on background nor any other apps than startup'ed ones running.

219.980 files:
==========

selecting containing folders, press shift del and wait for the confirmation dialog to appear:
xy v 11.30:

xy - duration: 19m58s (23m12 sec, if done from a search results list; 21 seconds for 109.314 files)
we - duration: 09m15s

similar results using xyplorer11.60.

==============================

actual deletion:

xy - duration: 55m27s - yes, ONE HOUR!!!

BUG REPORT: it says "refreshing list" and "refreshing the list done", but list still shows the selected files.

we - duration: 10m55s

>>>>>>> deletion of 73.377 empty folders, windows explorer only:

dialog to appear:
duration: 06m29s

actual deletion:
duration: 09m57s

Well, surprising results, thanks for sharing.

I tested deleting 200,000 files some months ago for other reasons and it was much much faster (2-3 minutes or so). Don't know what's going on here. Could it be -- again -- related to some virus scanner?

OK, I think I found a bug there that explains the extreme delay. The next version should take some seconds before the confirmation prompt appears. The actual deletion time is in Window's hands and out of my control. I hope to upload this fix within 1 hour.

that's the reason why i decided to take the time to test xyplorer against windows explorer.
I hope to upload this fix within 1 hour.
great, i may find some extra spare time to check it out. thank you for that!

deletion dialog to appear:

deleting containing folders:
timed 7m15s - 19m58s, previously

from search results list:
no system or session restart, which theoretically could speed up the process
timed 19m43 - 23 min, previously

BUG REPORT: on search pane, enabling 'cache search results' probably caused the 'found items' toolbar count to stand still while scanned items and path were correctly updated.

a previous search was stopped by esc as i thought it would be a good idea to enable caching.

the update was done only after the 'search done' notice appeared.

not even tried the actual deletion of files, sorry.

cache search results shouldn't be enough to avoid the search tab to perform a full rescan when I click on it after having activated other tabs?

Thanks for testing. At the moment I don't see any more possibilities to squeeze out even more speed.

The number of cached items is limited to 1000 by default. Bigger caches don't pay.
