Xyplorer freezes for about 10 seconds very frequently 25%cpu

Post by itsme28m »

Hi,

A few days ago i upgraded my pc with a samsung SSD and from 4GB to 8GB memory, i also installed windows 64-bit instead of 32-bit.

Afcourse, i have the right-click problem with xyplorer, but for that i found a solution with a freeware little program "WOW64 menu".

But now the big problem: xyplorer freezes alot! It is so bad that it freezes for 10 seconds after selecting just 2 files, if i want to delete them xyplorer freezes again for 10 seconds. If i select another file it freezes again 10 seconds! Then xyplorer works normal for a few minutes, and after that again after every thing i try to do i have a freeze of about 10 seconds or more...

I have installed the newest version of xyplorer, as antivirus i have the latest version of Avast.

In windows explorer i don't have this problem at all and everything works very fast within windows explorer, this is the opposite with xyplorer now, xyplorer is not usable, windows explorer is faster then ever since my upgrade.

What can the problem be? because of the 64-bit? When is xyplorer 64-bit coming?

I also have a synology nas and i'm connected to it, but that isn't the problem either, because today i only worked on a external hard drive and the build in SSD.

I already use the generic icons for super-fast browsing for all locations, i don't show icon overlays, auto-refresh is disabled.
I also tried to disable my antivirus scanner, also that didn't change anything...

What else can i do? Every time xyplorer freezes the cpu goes up to 25%, i also tried to start xyplorer with administration rights, also that didn't solve the problem. I'm out of ideas now....

All settings in xyplorer are back to standard settings except the ones i mentioned before that i changed hoping to solve the problem, but it didn't solve it. I just try to play small video file, after double clicking the file xyplorer process goes up to 25%, when i check the cpu usage i see 2 processors have 50% usage in those 10 seconds. When i do thesame in windows explorer everything starts instant.

The problem is almost always when double clicking a file or just selecting a file, also after selecting a file i got for about 10 seconds waiting, if i then click shift-delete to delete what i selected i got a 10 seconds waiting time before the delete warning message shows...

Disable my antivirus scanner didn't help either. So xyplorer is freezing for some reason and i can't find out what it is at the moment, i have xyplorer 11.60.0100 installed.

Really? For all I know this little program is meant to work in the opposite direction. :?

Wow64 menu shows the 64-bit menu in 32-bit programs. So for example 7zip, i installed the 64-bit version of that, but it didn't show up in xyplorer, after installing wow64 and click on show WOW64menu i had the richt click option.

-> Exclude XYplorer from the scanned programs -> i just did this, i will see if that solves the problem

Update: on the 32-bit version of windows i had Microsoft Security Essentials, and i didn't have this problem then and i didn't need to exclude xyplorer on the 32-bit version of windows either, i have choosen to use avast now, at the moment i'm not sure yet that it's the virus scanner or because xyplorer is 32-bit togheter with some other weird things in the pc

Your link says "Especially Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) can have a dramatic negative effect on speed.", weird, since i had just that on the 32-bit version without any problem, and now i have avast with 64-bit version of windows this problem comes up...

Uh, no, the opposite: Wow64 menu shows the 32-bit menu in 64-bit programs. Just tested to make sure.

Conc. your freeze issue: Can you reproduce it with a fresh install of XY?

I installed the new version of xyplorer 11.60.0.200 and i made sure the virus scanner doesn't scan the xyplorer and xycopy executables, however, the problem remains...

Edit: also, this started with a fresh clean install on windows 7 64-bit, xyplorer was about the first program that i installed and i had the problem right away, with just a clean install of xyplorer and standard settings without changing any setting, after that i tried a few changes to make it faster, but the freeze problem remains.

It is not always on thesame moment, when doing a bigger task like copying bigger files the problem is less, it is more a problem when doing small things like selecting some files, or trying do delete files, i even had a 10 seconds waiting time without doing anything, and just go from one window, like the crhome browser clicking to xyplorer.. then i go with my mouse cursor over the file menu... boom... 10 seconds freeze, i also had it when hovering over the toolbar without doing anything else, and without clicking on an icon. It is very annoying.

Does your Windows 7 x64-install have the built-in Windows Defender enabled? (It is by default, but installing some security software including MS Security Essentials, disables it.) If so, does excluding the XYplorer.exe and XYcopy.exe-processes, make any difference?

Hi nas8e9,

I think you solved this problem!

I went to the configuration screen of windows, double clicked on windows defender... in options exluded xyplorer.exe and XYcopy.exe... to be sure i closed xyplorer and started it again... and man... now everything flies! Now i see the difference with an SSD in my system

Not only the local disk is super fast, but access to my synology nas flies as well...

Without you i don't think i would have solved this. It seems with avast that windows doesn't disable windows defender.

Well since i have avast already, i completely disabled windows defender now.

THANKS A LOT!!!!

This is probably for a FAQ page. I am however not quite sure now what are the necessary conditions (Win version + antimalware combination) in which this is to be expected. Would be good to know.

(I am using XY also on a Vista and 8 (all 32 bit, I think) and have never noticed this.)

It seems the 10 seconds freeze is not solved anyway...

Somethimes everything works ok without any problem for a moment... and then... 10 seconds freeze again, just by selecting stuff in a directory, without going to another directory, just in the directory i was already in.

Doing real file work in xyplorer is very fast now when it works ok after disabling windows defender, the speed improvement after doing that is a huge difference.

However, the 10 seconds freeze remains a problem.

And it is very hard to track of why this freeze comes up somethimes. It doesn't seem to be related to a file extension or refreshing the directory, even after turning off refreshing the freeze comes still up somethimes.

I had it now multiple times with selecting a file or just clicking a file (any type of file can have the problem), even with just selecting a menu option or try to click on a command in the toolbar can make the 10 seconds freeze come up, without doing anything in the file list itself, then there is no renew of the file list needed, no files are getting selected and xyplorer doesn't have anything to do with a file yet, that's why it's so hard to see what the problem is. The 25% cpu usage only comes up in the xyplorer.exe file, maybe i need to install some little freeware program to see what exactly is going on there.

Not sure what is applicable to your system but on my XP sys, I've used "Whats Running" and "Process Explorer" (by SysInternals)...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

A marginal idea, just to be sure: System events list and device manager show nothing suspicious on your machine? No interrupt numbers clash or such a thing? I know that this is most probably not the case, however, it just occurred to me as a possibility (in the lack of better ideas).

In my system events list and device manager was nothing related to this problem, also no interrupt numbers clash, all updated drivers installed.

Now i have microsoft security essentials, and this problem still comes up very frequently, somethimes it's ok for about an hour, then the problem comes up again and i have the problem almost every minute as long as i use xyplorer, closing and re-opening xyplorer doesn't seem to help.

However, just now i found out it still is a problem with the usage of the virus scanner and xyplorer, avast had the problem, but microsoft security essentials togheter with xyplorer has thesame problem! I excluded xycopy.exe and xyplorer.exe, that didn't help, so i excluded the whole directory of xyplorer, that didn't help either.

I just found this out when i didn't see a higher cpu usage, so i clicked on the option to see it for all users, then msmpeng.exe came up with a higher cpu usage. I disabled the antivirus scanner and i didn't have the freeze problem yet.

What to do now? go on without any virus protection? or get rid of xyplorer? .... difficult choice...

Edit: are there any other files that i can exlude in microsoft security essentials, like files system files of windows exluding from scanning so that i can use xyplorer without this freeze problem?

Edit 2: I did read the faq at xyplorer.com on MSE again, seems you have to exclude it from the process, not from the "files and locations", could this be the problem? what exactly is the difference? I thought xyplorer is a program, not a service? Anyway, i just excluded it from the services now, gonna see if that changes something.

Update:

I got xyplorer excluded totally from Microsoft Security Essentials, after some searching i found another problem with the solution that you have to exclude the directories of microsoft security essentials also, so i did that, however, no improvement at all.

The last few days was only searching for files, selecting files and deleting files. Today i actually tried to use xyplorer for copying something, a 300MB file took more then 5 minutes, it went very slow, cpu usage of xyplorer was on 25% again. I turned of microsoft security essentials and everything went back to normal.

All thesame problems with avast also, so that are 2 antivirus scanners that don't seem to work well togheter with xyplorer... excluding them from scanning doesn't help either.

Another idea that comes to mind is... can the 64-bit be the cause? I had 64-bit versions of avast and microsoft security essentials. Maybe it could be related, maybe not... maybe the excluding process doesn't want to work in a 64-bit antivirus scanner on a 32-bit program...

Or is there still something else i can do? At the moment i only see 2 options: uninstall the antivirus scanner, and don't install any other antivirus scanner, and work unprotected from viruses or uninstall xyplorer... That's a hard choise, while xyplorer increased the speed alot for searching files, while now it slows down even when selecting files very frequently when an antivirus scanner is active. And again, just excluding xyplorer does not solve this with me, i tried it different ways including rebooting, the problem stays until i completely disable the virus scanner, both avast and microsoft essential, both 64-bit version have this problem and i didn't find another program that has problems with this, only xyplorer with an antivirus scanner are fighting with eachother...

All these problems started since i went from windows 7 32-bit to windows 7 64-bit... before i had 32-bit of windows 7 for a long time, within that time i used avast for a long period and microsoft essentials for a long period and i had no problem at all, i also didn't have to exclude xyplorer, now that i'm on 64-bit of windows 7, on thesame system, it is not usable anymore, the biggest change till now was disabling windows defender, but it does not solve the 25% high cpu usage and 10 seconds waiting time when selecting things or just clicking with the mouse on a toolbar button or menu option.

itsme28m: I would hope that you're not having two AV products active at the same time -- you mentioned MSE and Avast.
