TIP=> improving XYplorer thumbnail+preview of image+office

Post by cadu »

Former I have posted information about third-party software that provides thumbnail visualization through Windows Explorer and also XYplorer (http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7899). Besides thumbnail, they improve XYplorer preview as well.

What is amazing it is that XYplorer still providing "hold left click" expansion image (mouse down blow up - http://www.xyplorer.com/product.htm#mdbu) to all thumbnail/preview not supported by default (SVG, PSPIMAGE, AI, EPS etc.). Also, the view "details with thumbnails" is updated.

After having proceed with tests on them, follow more comprehensive comments.

About image:

a) Mysticthumbs => http://www.mysticcoder.net/mysticthumbs.html

From all I have tested this has the broad support, including multilayer formats (PSD, PSP), SVG, AI and RAW. It provides further resources through context menu (mouse right click). Although Mysticthumbs doesn't provide support to XCF (Gimp) yet, through a contact with developer he told me this will be implemented soon (next releases) of the current version. Available in many languages. However, Mysticthumbs is available to 30 day trial only, and license has cost (applied just to the current version; next version you need to pay upgrade).

Additional info=> http://www.softoxi.com/mysticthumbs.html

b) Sagethumbs => http://code.google.com/p/sagethumbs/

It provides thumbnails to many formats, including RAW, XCF (Gimp), PSD, PSP, AI. It provides further resources through context menu. Howerver, the thumbnails (and preview) to multilayer images is "black". I mean, it is supposed additional step to be possible visualize multilayer (I don't know how). SVG isn't supported as well. The good news is that Sagethumbs is free and is available in many languages.

c) Renesis => http://www.localinformationsystems.co.uk/Downloads.aspx

It is supposed to provide SVG support. However the development of Renesis was stopped. I found this link:
http://www.localinformationsystems.co.uk/Downloads.aspx in which the installation file is available yet. However I didn't test it and I don't know about this website and the available file integrity. Test by your own risk!

About Office:

The thumbnail visualization of Office files is attached (in many cases) with the need of generate the thumbnail when "saving as". It is easy to see a check box in the save dialog window. After have saved Office files with thumbnails I could visualize them into XYplorer. However, the thumbnails of Word and Excel (for instance) are almost unreadable, because of the amount of information this kind of files common have. To remove added thumbnail it is just "saved as" again and uncheck thumbnail box.

IMHO, images are great to thumbnails, Powerpoint sometimes, PDF depends what was created, Word and Excell are harder to see! Anyway, using XYplorer "mouse down blow up", even Word and Excell could be handle in order to obtain satisfactory visualization (faster than preview if the intent is just to see first document page).

Help:

I am not familiarized with XYplorer advanced configurations about:
- Thumbnails
- Preview
- Preview formats

So, if someone found "good" settings to improve XYplorer to deal with the thumbnail software / plugins mentioned above, please share this information here!!!

Hi'
This is indeed a useful post... that I had missed before!
So I'll thank the poster nonetheless :) , and bump the post with a few keywords to help future searches:
For those who need an image codec pack or WIC Codecs (Windows Imaging Component) to view their pictures, try the suggestions here!
FYI You could also try the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack (suggested by Don).
Personally I haven't tested it yet, I went the Sagethumbs way for now, it's quite snappy (though seemingly less polyvalent). If you don't see some rare RAW formats, the working (small) drawback is to check "Prefer image file embedded thumbnails" in its options.
Enjoy your pictures! :wink:
